Default compressor question

i have a compressor question. My wifes 96 honda accord a/c compressor went out years ago. she didnt want to have it fixed cuz she didnt want to spend the money then. well now she had some random mechanic check it out and he said it needed to be fixed asap cuz it can lock the car down. and basically shut it down. Is this true or false. i never heard of it before... now the car has been a shaking a bit in the last week but the emissions light came on with the shaking so i'm assuming thats related. just curious before theis mechanic rips someone off or her car locks down. thanks guys

The A/C compressor won't lock up your engine, as long as the A/C isn't turned on, the A/C compressor pully acts as a idler pully until the A/C clutch is engaged. So as long as the A/C is turned off you can have a locked up compressor and it won't hurt a thing. To be on the safe side unplug the compressor at the clutch.

It shouldn't have anything to do with your Check Engine Light.

Even if the compressor locked up while the A/c was on, all it would do is smoke the belt and make some noise.
