Default 1965 Mustang Oil Type

I just purchased my first Mustang (my dream as a kid). What type of oil should I use in my 1965 Mustang. It's the original motor and its a 289.

Thanks,
Alice

I would use synthetic oil like Amsoil or Mobil 1.

I wouldnt use syn. Syn is only good for an engine if that is all you have ran in the engine since it was built. It will not hurt the engine but it also will not benefit the engine, its just costing you more for syn then regular oil. I had a 66' mustang and i always ran 5w-30 and that seemed to work great.

There is no wrong time to switch to synthetic. It be put in at 3000 miles or 300000 miles and the benefits will be there. It has a higher film strength meaning it doesn't break down like conventional oil. It also doesn't drain completely off the parts, meaning lower friction on cold start up. The viscosity you choose depends on the pressure it has now. If it's consistantly over 60 psi, a simple 10W40 would be good. If it's lower, then a slightly thicker would be right.

Ask me why I ran "only" a 13.54.

10W30, changed every 3000 miles, or 1500-2000 if you don't drive it at least 30-50 miles a week to drive out the water and gasoline from the crankcase. I won't advocate use of synthetics in old engines due to seal leakage problems, especially on a non-rebuilt engine.
