Default ProComp Heads: Are they quality??

I saw a deal for a crate engine on eBay with ProComp aluminum heads. I know from conversing with a certain engine techie (mw, you're the MAN) that AFR, Victor Jr, and Trick Flow are good, but what about the ProComp aluminum heads????

I have never seen any ProComp heads in person, and have only heard a few things about them (nothing bad), although from what I can recall, they have an older design, similar to the Edelbrock Performer heads. They aren't going to be the best heads out there, but I don't believe they are junk either.

If I can get them ported to the engine, would that make much of a difference???

Porting heads is always beneficial (so long as it's done by a qualified person).

The ProComp heads that are always listed on E Bay have quite a reputation for not having good casting quality. Some heads are OK and then there will be a run of bad ones. Some of them I've heard are machined wrong where spacing between bolt holes will be off. I'd stay away from these Chinese rip offs. If you value the engine, get some heads from a well known company and look to save some money elsewhere. ---Chuck
