Question Front transmission seal bing fixed. Should fluid and filter be changed now too?

I have a 98 Mustang GT Automatic..with about 55,000 miles....I have a front seal transmission leak..being fixed now....

Is it a good idea to change the transmission fluid/filter??? Mechanic says transmission fluid never needs to be changed ....I drive a lot in the city...probably runs hot..

Your mechanic is dead wrong about saying "transmission fluid never needs to be changed". If you check your owners manual, you will see a recommended service period for changing transmission fluid and filter.

Regarding your question: Change both the fluid and filter now, especially if you are unaware as to when it was last changed. The added cost should be minimal.

If you decide you want to have it changed, don't bother arguing or correcting your mechanic. Just tell him you decided you want it changed and that you would feel more at ease knowing it has been.

The 1998 Mustang is a very nice ride. Looking forward to seeing a few pictures in your members gallery when you get some time. All the Best with your GT.

Anybody who says tranny fluid doesn't ever need to be changed does need to have their hands on a car. Tranny fluid typically needs changing around 25000-30000 miles and it breaks down, just like engine oil. I bet it'll come out super thin, like water, and be more brown than bright red like it should be. I'd suggest getting either a new pan with a drain plug in it or take your stock pan and have a drain plug installed before putting it back on. Ford doesn't put drain plugs in the tranny pans because they don't want you to just drain the fluid and refill, they want you to change the filter too.

when doing a front pump seal, most of the fluid will already be drained out. he is goin to fill the trans back up anyway, so you dont need to pay more to have the fluid changed because you are already paying for that. just buy another filter.
