Diablo? I read somewhere that you turn it on and off for performance reasons. I have no experince with this chip nor any chips, but Diablo is advertised a lot in 5.0 Mustang & Super Fords

I'm thinking it's not always so much the chip but the tuner. The best way to get a chip is to have it burned for your car on the dyno. A mail order chip is hit and miss, in my experience. A competent tuner can burn the chip based specifically for your car and mods at the time. He can work out all the quirks while maximazing performance. Of course, sometimes the mail order is madatory due to a lack of tuners (my current situation ) but if at all possible, dyno-tune it. As for my chip, I use Autologic. A lot of good tuners use their software, Swanson Performance, JMS, True Blue Performance, LaRocca's, etc.

There are only three things the copilot should ever say:
1. Nice landing, Sir.
2. I'll buy the first round.
3. I'll take the ugly one.
I dont think that you should get a chip. Once you get a chip and have it burned thats it! If you do any modifications, you have to send it back and have it reburned. You should look into a Tweecer. It is like a chip, but you can have 5 different tunes on it, and you can change it anytime you make mods.
Any chip is just as good as the tuner that programs it, than includes Autologic, JMS, Sportchips, Hypertech ......etc.
Most chips are capable of changing most EEC IV and V tables, scalars and parameters. But only a capable tuner is able to do it right.
Diablo chips are easy to re-program, but not all dealers have the required tools to do it and you will have to send the chip to them
On the other hand, authorized Diablosport tuners (not resellers) will reprogram the chip at their facilities. Some of them might have dynos, others not, and the later will relay on Diablosports database of tunning programs.
Diablo has a ton of "profiles" some proven to work with basic bolt ons or some "cookbook" modifications (like heads, intake, cams, etc).
So in the mail order chip "world" diablo beats many order companies.
The best thing is a EECTuner or Tweecer, but you wont get far without a dyno or at least a GTech to test your changes. And the learning curve is steep.
Chips dont have a good cost to horsepower ratio thats for sure. I started out with a generic hypertech chip when I got my car 6 years ago. The Hypertech basically sucked. Likewise, after I started performing some mods it seemed totally useless. I then considered an EEC tuner, but since I have no computer skills, I opted not to. I read alot about Diablo chips but to me sound like a glorified Hypertech chip, plus it sounds like something that it designed for imports. I would have liked to have a dyno-tuned chip but no where even close performs them. I settled on a JMS custom burned Autologic chip w/ three settings. The first one I received didn't have a program installed on it and I had to ship it back. It seems as if the one I have know is good except I don't notice much of a difference from programs one to three.
I disagree about a chip being a waste of money. I had a Fordchip custom burned chip done on a Dynojet, and they "found" 40 rwhp from the base numbers. Granted, the car was taken to them with stock timing, stock fuel pressure, and the Extender already removed, but even "pre-chipped", I thought I had the car running good, and evidently it wasn't. Unfortunately, they never cured my cold start stalling issues, even after a new chip was burned (through the mail using my dyno files). They did rid the car of the factory rev limiter, the timing retard between shifts, and richened the way too lean factory a/f ratio from a piston burning 17.5:1 to a much, much safer 13:1 ratio....
I have the "extra" chip, burned by FORDCHIP, who used a DiabloSport "blank", if anyone's interested I'll sell it for $100 shipped. My car is a 94 GT with aftermarket heads, cam and extrude honed Cobra intake...
It would save someone a good bit of money as far as having to omnly get a re-burn, instead of having to buy the chip as well...
FWIW, Hypertech chips for Fords have NEVER been worth a damn...

Has anyone ever heard of a chip gaining 7 mph in the quarter mile?
The reason I ask is because my combo should be trapping at about 107 in the quarter, but the best I can pull is a 100.
It pulls strong (seat of the pants) with no obvious miss. Its just doesn't pull strong enough.

I use and recommend the TwEECer. I spent a total of $800 for a laptop and the Tweecer w/ real time datalogging. A couple weeks and I learned how to use it pretty well. Now I LOVE it.
The car is so much more fun to drive now, and I have a stock engine. If you want something to help your car go faster, get an extender. If you want a chip that will grow with your car, get a Tweecer.
The only way I would recommend a chip burnt on a dyno by someone else is if your are DONE modifying the car.
The Tweecer has a huge user base and people know how to use it. You can tune a stock engine or make your 600hp blown 331 idle/start just like stock. It isn't that hard.......
i actually took mine out and ran a fast time at the track. it was an off the shelf chip that i didnt buy, but was in the computer already so i tried it and it didnt really do anything. car runs EXACTLY the same in and out, so i sold it at the track for 5 bucks and bought a hot dog and pepsi.
