Default I Need information on changing my 302 marine motor with 302 HO

To make along story short,I now own a mid to late 80's 302 gt roller motor with a way too large cam and all the goodies to go with it.I have been away from the mechanic thing for awhile and did not realize the changes made to the 302 in recent years.

Can someone please tell me if the following observations are correct.

#1 It has a 351 w firing order
#2 Balance is different from my marine 302
#3 Water pump turns in the opposite direction
#4 Distributer might have different gear to compensate for cam hardness.

My marine 302 is stock block with 351w heads and a two bbl carb.It had plenty of power with this set up but a winterizing mistake destroyed the block and heads.

I bought the 302 gt short block without realizing the changes made to the 302.The fact that it was nearly new and had big cam and roller accessories sparked my purchase.Started to put everything together and luckily realized some of the differences before I got completely done and installed the motor in the boat

I got a set of stock 302 gt heads and had them completely gone through by a machine shop. The push rods from my motor were for the Windsor heads and they are too long.

Do I need 6.272 " hardened push rods for this application?
Do I need guide plates for the push rods?
I have crane roller rockers also [non-adjustable] and some set up hints would help too!

Next,Balance
I read several forums on balance issues but I an not sure if that will pertain to the marine application as there is no transmission.I know there is a 28 in oz and a 50 in oz.harmonic balancer and flywheel setup.
Can I use my marine 302 balancer and flywheel set up on the 302 gt motor?
If I use the balancer that came with the gt motor and find a matching flywheel ,my pulleys for alt and water pump will not match up and/or wrong bolt patterns.I really want to keep belt pulley's. Any suggestion here?

I have to keep the marine water pump as I believe it is different from automotive and the direction it turns is different from the one on HO motor which is no problem.I put the timing cover from the marine motor on for the mechanical fuel pump and water pump. The gt motor had a double roller timing set but not made for a fuel pump eccentric.I put the single roller set on from the marine motor but afraid of the big cam setup.

Is there a double roller timing set for the HO 302 that accepts fuel pump eccentric ? or/
Does a stock 302 double roller set work?
Or should I just use my marine timing set?

Next
I want to use the stock marine distributer for the stainless components.
Should the distributer gear be changed because of the roller cam?

I know this sounds like the wrong way to treat a hi-po motor but I am going to keep the stock two bbl intake set up for the efficiency factor. Lots of horsepower is not that necessary as I am sure this motor is going to have enough ponies to push an outdrive driven boat that doesn't weigh very much.Does anyone see any problems with the lesser carbueration.
FYI
Cam is a Ford Motorsport x303 from Summit racing equipment with hydraulic roller lifters
Duration@ .050: 224`/224`. lift:.542"/.542".
It's a lot of cam for the application and I really want to keep it but if there's going to be a problem that I cant for see, please let me know.
Sorry for the long quiz session, but want to get all I can get done this weekend while I have a hoist.

Your assumptions 1-4 are totally correct, they use a forged steel gear to go with the roller cam FYI.

The stock 5.0L rockers bolt to the heads and just torque down, so if you have 5.0 heads, that's how it works (very different, I know). No need for guideplates and hardened pushrods with this setup.

The 5.0L is 50oz balance and I suspect the later model marine motors are as well, but I know diddly about boat motors.

All 70+ 302s and 5.0s used 4 bolt pullies, everything pre-70 used 3 bolt. If you need a 3 bolt 50oz balancer, summit has a summit brand 'stock replacement' for an 88 Mustang GT that has both bolt patterns.

For the mech fuel pump, you can either run your timing set or knock the eccentric out of te 5.0L and put in a longer one.

you'll NEED a steel gear to go with that roller cam, but they are pretty common and under $50

With a 2bbl it might run like crap since it's a pretty mis-matched combo, but then again I can never leave well enough alone either, so I'm biased.

Default Having similar issues

http://www.allfordmustangs.com/forum...cons/icon1.gif Matching a damper with Ford 302 Flywheel
I have a Ford 302 vintage 1974 in a Glastron Boat with a Volvo stern drive. I am getting a Ford Explorer crate motor shipped to me. I do not have the exact year, block number, etc. It has GT40 heads.

I noticed that it has a new harmonic balancer but no flywheel. I have read that flywheels and balancers have to be balanced but am not sure how to accomplish this or how to find the correct flywheel.

Will my old setup work?

Do the flywheel and the balancer have to be oriented similarly or do you just bolt up the flywheel? Is this the same for a boating application?

I also picked up a used Mercruiser Fuel Injection from a 1993 engine. Is this a good option or should I stick to carburetion.

I have pretty good mechanical skills but this one is out of my leave.

How much horsepower can I get out of this engine (the old one was 200 hp)?

Need help on this one.

thanks,

Jim

Default Ford Explorer 302 in old Glastron

Thanks for the inputs. Sorry for the misinformation, the carb on the unit is a Holley 450 CFM 4 bbl which came standard on the boat. Since the boat is old it does not have the J-tubes.

The EFI seems to get really complicated and so I think I will bypass that one. Since the carb is old I might get a new one. I had planned to rebuild the old one. Has anyone ever tried an Edelbrock Marine Carb.

Also, in sizing I wonder if 600 CFM is too big. There are a lot more of them around than the 450 CFM models.

I am wondering if there is any way to find out what cam is in the new Explorer 302 engine.
