Default lookin for differences in fuel sending units

Somewhere I read that pre 86 and post 86 fuel sending units had different ohm ranges. The reason I am looking for this kind of info is that I have done a complete 93 EFI HO transplant into an 82 coupe. The gas gauge is sitting at 3/4 full with 2 gallons of gas. If it is the case that there were different ohm ranges, I should just need to solder in a resistor to make the correction. ( I hope )

engine mods will be posted later. And the reason for Shetland is, well let's just say if anyone has ever had a Shetland Pony as a kid and tried this type of motor transplant as an adult will understand.

That may be possible, I'd suggest getting a 1993 sending unit though and be done with it.

Pre 89 vehicles used a 78 ohm sending unit, post 89 vehicles used a 158 ohm sending unit.

You want the 89+

Thanks all, after further review and talking to the folks at Autometer it’s doesn’t seem that simple. I have the sender for the 93 in the 93 gas tank. And the 82 gauge in the dash of the 82 Mustang. Autometer says
Fuel Level
(16Ω Empty/158Ω Full)
Post 89
X
X
Fuel Level
(73Ω Empty/8-12Ω Full)
Pre 89
X
X

So not only are they different in the ohm range, but opposite as well.
So you may say then change the gauge. That problem is the 82 gauge is modular and sits behind the faceplate. The 93 gauge faceplate is integrated and the needle sticks through it from the back. (if I’m not mistaking.) So, I’ll make some trips to the local salvage hard and se if I can flip the wiper on a post 89 sending unit and put in a 50% resister. Unless someone has yet a better idea…
Thanks

OK; The 83 LTD (or Fairmont) fuel sending unit fits the sending unit opening of the 93 Mustang fuel tank, but has the correct ohm range. (with a little adjustment)
Thanks to all for trying to help...............
just need to plug the fuel pickup on the LTD sending/pickup unit

GM,
The whole conversion from a carbed mustang to an EFI mustang is complex and not completley documented. I'm not sure where you got lost.. I beleive I know more about the process, at this point than some...

I'm still lost. This thread was about a fuel sending unit (or atleast, that's how it started), and then all of a sudden your posts become offesnive... at which point, I'm lost to the point of where those posts came from? Did they stem from another thread, or what?

Sorry GM, I didn’t want it to seam that way. Your advices lead me on a search that resulted in a positive outcome, and I thank you for that. Others advice however was totally off base and non productive. Another poster replied “I'd suggest getting a 1993 sending unit though and be done with it.” Well that was not even close…. But again thanks for your input that lead me to the truth, and the correct sending unit.

No problem. I just found those last 2 posts off center from the thread, which was why I was confused. I thought I was missing something.

Glad you have it fixed
