Default 289 starter motor grinds on the flywheel, 1966 Mustang, any suggestions?

Hi Guys, I'm new here, and I hope someone out there can point us in the right direction. My Son is having starter motor problems with his 66 289,3 speed Mustang.About half the time the starter grinds on the flywheel, He has tried 2 or 3 different starters, pulled the trany and replaced the flywheel,as it was chewed up,today He went to the starter shop near here and the guy put a different gear on the starter and it still does the same thing, any Ideas. Thank You,Bob

Has your son used a feeler gauge and used the shims for the starter which are usually included with a rebuilt starter or can buy them at any parts store.

Thanks for taking the time, My Son has used one spacer, and it just moved the starter to far away,it just spun without making contact with the flywheel,He has not used any shims. We noticed that the Bell Housing Plate is a little tweaked right where the starter bolts up,2 bolts only as this is a older engine and BH. I guess we need to address that back plate. Thanks Again,Bob
