I live in MA, I had an emissions test when I had my old Ford LTD Wagon, it was an 84' and I needed to replace the entire exhaust because it was completly rusted out, i had to replace the cats as well before I could pass. (Or so I was told)

Definitely neet cats in Massachusetts depending on the year of your car (odd or even year) you only have a "sniff" test every other year. 1 year is safety equipment check, next year is emissions and safety I believe.

Let me clear that up....yes you need cats. As for the inspection it's every other year that they do an emissions test I believe. Sorry for not being as direct in the first post.

It's my understanding that any emission controlled device that was installed from the factory must be on the car when it comes to the inspection process, because the technician has to perform a visual inspection, as well as a technical inspection. If the car no longer has to comply with the emissions test because of age, it must still pass the visual exam.
We all know that there are ways around this. It certainly helps if you know someone who can "help" you out.
twilight, yes...you DEFINITELY need cats....is that clear enough for you??? he he he

anyone know about the new law that was passed recently? no cats necessary anymore for vehicles earlier than 1995, right? so a '92 would pass with an H-pipe?

Since catalytic converters debuted in the early '70's it has been Federally mandated that it is illegal to remove those and any other smog type equipment from any car that initially came equipped with those components. That law has not changed and therefore, it is illegal to remove them. Thus, a car is "supposed" to fail the inspection if anything's missing. Technically speaking, the certified inspector is supposed to look for cats and other smog equipment and if anything is missing, he must make the decision to fail the vehicle. IT'S HIS JOB!
However, there are plenty of certified inspectors who will look the other way and will pass a car that's missing it's smog equipment. The trick is to find one of those guys. Good luck!

Yeah, and the registry cop walks in and you get a rejection sticker, and he loses his license. You definetly need cats, in Massachusetts I don't know about New Hampshire, Mike.

You don't find too many of those four eyed Cobras, anymore they're getting scaerce. Hang on to that one, they're very rare and a lot of people never heard of them. When you mention Cobra, everyone assumes SVT and the first year was 93, Mike.
Ya not anymore, MA put out new laws and just about every place you have to go to get inspected supposidly is on monitored cameras. I guess this way they can see if they hook up a diff vehicle to pass anotherone.
