Ford Takes On 1,000-Lap Challenge With 2011 V-6 Mustang
Ford is going to put the 2011 Mustangs fuel economy reputation on the line in June when it rolls up to the line at Bristol Motor Speedway to take on the 1,000-lap Challenge. That is at least 1,000 loops around Bristol on a single tank of gas, and Ford has a brand new 2011 V-6 Mustang for someone who can guess exactly how many laps it covers.
So are they going to set the cruise control at 55 with no AC and the windows up with 40 psi in the tires hugging the lower part of the track? I wonder if they will be using hypermiling techniques? Also sounds like several drivers might be involved. All these and more will determine the outcome. Very hard to guess, but my money is over the 1000 mile mark. It will be a fun event to watch. You think they will televise it? I hope someone from this site wins.
I would also imagine that they would want to relocate the fuel pump to pick up more to the right of the tank if it isn't all ready.
dhuber, that's 1000 laps, 500 miles I believe.
You can bet Ford is gong to throw every little trick they know at this attempt. 500 miles at 31 mpg gives 16.13 gals required. Stoping to change drivers would drop it down.
