Need more info. What's your combo, what fuel pressure are you running. when does it smoke, all the time or when you got your foot in it?

ok here it goes......i bought the car like it is. one thing that has got me confused is it has no fuel pressure regulator and no guage to tell me what it's running........yes it smokes all the time and kills mosquitos when i get into it. i pulled the chip and it looks to be the one vortec sends with their kit. the MAF looks to be an 80mm from c&l. looks to me like the previous owner either had it tuned in that way, and that is the reason for not having the regulator and guage, or sold the stuff off before he traded the car in. the car runs real strong but it is a headache trying to figure out what he has done to the car. thanks for your help.

Does the car have stock heads? If so get rid of those injectors ,WAY TO BIG! Also does the car have an FMU? If so that is causing the overrich condition,if you disconnect it this will help but not fix the fuel problem if the stock heads are still on the car,how many pounds is the supercharger rated at?If less than 9Lb. put in the factory injectors and attach the FMU again if one is on it.

When does the car smell like gas, at idle or all the time? The fmu would not affect the car at idle, only when you get into boost. I bet though, with 30# injectors and fmu, you are going way rich at full boost. Do you know the fmu ratio? Anyway, the best way to tell what is going on is to go to a dyno and measure the air-fuel. Normally the generic chips from company's like Vortech will cause the car to run way rich.

First off randy dont feel stupid not knowing what an FMU is,if you dont ask you wont know, for a good FMU explination go to-http://superchargersonline.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=605. You need to get a fuel gauge on that fuel line to see what is going on pressure wise, also find out if possable what fuel pump size is in it,also get ahold of somebody to see about disconnecting the FMU to see if this is causing a problem,if you have never done this be carefull,i had a $3000 fire because of not knowing the proper way of hooking a fuel line up proper at the time.Research and get more info on what has been modified on this car if possable. If there is this much fuel dumping into the engine your going to wash your rings away because it is killing your oil and causing it to breakdown. You need to get this fixed before hammering the throttle or your engine will fail.It just sounds like who ever had this car over compinsated the fuel system and could not figure it out and decided to dump it on you.Good luck i hope this advice helps.

First and foremost, your 98 fuel rails have a fuel pressure regulator but it's welded on there. If you want an aftermarket regulator you're going to have to swap back to 96/97 fuel rails. I run the 96/97 rails with an Aeromotive #13102 fuel pressure regualtor that is boost safe (i.e. 1:1).

I don't like FMU's no matter what anyone says and they are a bandaid in my honest opinion. If you have an FMU, it will be on the passenger side and hooked up to near the fender (inside).

What you need is a good tune. I highly recommend you get that car on a wideband dyno and monitoring the a/f very closely.

Good luck. BTW, I have a 98 GT and it now has a 2000GT engine in it so I've been there, done that. I run vortech "S" trim, 42# injectors, prom 80mm MAF, NO FMU, and custom tune.

Good luck,
Tim

P.S. here is a picture of my engine compartment years ago to let you know what the FMU looks like since you're asking.

If you look on the passenger side, there is a "round" thing sitting there with a vacuum hose hooked to it right near the strut tower. That is the FMU.

Hope this helps.

thank you guys for the info, well from the pic i just seen there is no fmu on my car. so that tells me that the guy who set this car up had a good tune or just didn't know what he was doing. in any case thanks again.
