Does anyone here have expeirience with installing a turbo on a 5.0? Do they require the same setup as superchargers as far as cooling /oil . Or can you in theory just "bolt" one on. From what I have heard, a single turbo on a stock 5.0 will easily put it in the low 13's high 12's.
A turbo is quite different from a supercharger, even though they both perform the same function. They work by compressing the air in your intake, meaning more air in a smaller space. Add more fuel and that equals more power. Most superchargers are driven by a belt running off of your crank pulley, meaning they are easy to bolt on, but they rob some power from the engine because it takes energy to turn the compressor.
Turbochargers on the other hand, are connected to the exhaust system, and exhaust gas leaving the cylinders turns a wheel which is connected to the compressor via a shaft. This is essentially free horsepower, but it is much more difficult to install because you have to re-route exhaust gases, and because you are running off of exhaust gas, there is a lot of heat involved. I think I'm explaining that right, if not I'm sure someone here can correct me. Check out the tech articles, last I saw there was some very comprehensive info there. Good Luck...
Call Cartech. They have just the single turbo kit you need for the street if you got the money. A stock 5.0 can run mid 11s with gears and slicks with Cartechs street outlaw setup. Of course you will have to upgrade ignition and fuel. These companys can answer all your questions. On the street a turbo also builds full boost at low engine speeds vs a centrifical at redline. One things for sure, the cops can't hear the turbo as exhaust is quiet.
Thanks for the info, I know how they work I just had questions about technical setup. Thanks though. I know superchargers require a few extra items to be installed like rerouting fuel lines/oil lines....? I will probably end up calling cartech. I know you can't have long tube headers with them but thats no biggie. I'd like to try to fabricate my own maybe with a turbo from an older svo mustang. I heard that pound for pound turbos are worth their weight and produce good numbers on stock gts. Does anyone have expierience with this.(homemade fabrication)
for a turbo you'll need new headers and a downpipe so the exhuast can drive a turbo. you're also in for a lot of work with the intercooler/wastegate/blowoff value setup. If your considing doing this i would have a professonal do mine.

btw do not try to use a single SVO turbo on a 5.0. you will fry the turbo and possible your engine. There is way too much volume to a 5.0 for that turbo to handle. Now two SVO turbos, thats a whole other story

Thanks I have been researching a lot lately. I found some decent thunderbird garrett turbos that I know work for my application. For all of you 2.3 liter mustang owners I saw a website where this guy had a really fast single turbo mustang. I'll see if I can find it.
I know of that site and it wasn't on there. It was a geocities site and it had very detailed info on improving your 2.3 engine, including swapping the head with a volvo one,etc etc, I can't seem to find it though.
tamu, man .. after reading up on Mike's turbo 4, I'm thinking about doing the same thing. I'd imagine it would be fairly cheap to do, not only that but it'd be a fairly fast car as well.
