Holley's 05171 NOS Kit & Methanol Injection Hey guys, my friend is interested in adding some pep to his 97 GT on a budget. I told him we could put together a supercharger kit for around $1500, buying a used head unit and the brackets etc, but I'd like to educate him on all his options. Anybody used the 05171NOS kit by Holley? It's made for his year and stock engine car (dry kit), looks like it would work very nicely. Hes worried his engine will blow, but hes just paranoid like that. I think hes got like 100k miles on it. Nothing to worry about for a 120hp increase right? I keep seeing these videos on youtube of manifolds exploding, so am I correct in assuming that a dry kit would eliminate or minimize the chance of a nitrous backfire? Hes got this idea in his head about installing methanol injection on his N/A motor. Has anyone heard of what kind of gains can be had by injection methanol without any other power adders? I told him that meth kits are mainly used as a method to ward off detonation that sometimes comes with forced induction, and let you squeeze more out of a turbo or supercharger because of that. I know that injecting methanol will cool the intake charge, which would lead to increased air density, thus more power per combustion stroke, but I feel that the air density increase that would be gained by taking out like what 20-30* of heat from the intake charge would be pretty marginal. What do you guys say? I guess he might be able to get 15-20 hp gains from using a programmer to advance the timing, and using the meth to increase octane to ward off the obvious det. that would occur, and also utilize the air density increase from the cooling effect, but thats like $300 programmer + $300 meth kit = $600 for 15-20 whp. Or he could just pay $600 for the nitrous kit and get +120 hp! But the way I understand it, advancing timing to gain power is kind of a crutch, isnt very good for the engine, and won't gain very much on its own. I would only advance timing if some kind of mod I did would modify the combustion process enough that it would be needed. What do you guys have to say to all this? |
