Default What is water injection??

What is a water injected system, how and where is it injected into, and how much of a benifit is it? I've heard of it but don't know anything about it. Sounds like cheap HP gains!

Water is mixed with methanol i think, could be ethanol. Anyway it is mixed with some kind of alcohol and used to cool your turbo. It makes it run cooler so it is not potentially damaging to your engine. I don't think it can be done to a naturally aspirated enigne.

a 50/50 water/methanol mix (windshield washer fluid) is injected pre throttle body or on supercharged applications, pre-compressor and post compressor. It cools the air charge significantly allowing you to advance timing. It also boosts octane.

Years ago, lots of people used water injection to compensate for lack of high octane fuel in high compression and forced induction engines. The water or water/alcohol mixture does not itself increase octane, or horsepower, it just cools the combustion chamber (and helps keep it cleaner), allowing for higher cylinder pressures.

I seem to remember that British researcher and automotive author and enthusiast, David Vizard, tested water injection on very high compression engines (like 16:1 +). I no longer remember what he wrote, but think there was a point where it was no longer effective.

Todays systems inject a 50/50 mix of water and methanol (I make my mix with a gal of -20* washer fluid and then mix in 2 bottles of heet (yellow bottle) to get the 50/50 mix) after the supercharger/turbo and it will increase the octane and lower intake air temperatures allowing you to run more timing and make more power. Meth will increase your octane to about 112-116. With my meth kit on my old combo I picked up 82rwhp when it was tuned. That is the best bang for the buck that I have found. If you have anyother questions feel free to ask.

What about moistier content? Is there a concern if it is mixing with combustion? Is that mixing with the oil or is it that volitle there is absolutly no concern?

I'm getting the picture except for the high compression on a forced induced motor? Is that possible to do using water injection? Unless I miss understood that.

Personally I do a water methanol mix...

Water injection is basically used to reduce combustion chamber temperatures/EGT's... It turn, it helps keep knock down.

A lot of people like myself do a water/methanol injection system and use the water/meth system as sort of an octane booster. With water/meth injection, I can run more boost and more timing safely to make more power. So in my car I basically run around on a race gas tune all the time. It makes the car a lot more fun.

It can be done on a N/A car, but it's not very common.

It is sprayed out in a fine mist and it atomizes very quickly so there are no puddles or worries. It does not make it into the oil. I know of at least 30 people that have meth kits that have had no problems with puddling or water/meth in the oil.

Yes water injection can b done on N/A engines. Edelbrock actually mad a kit back on the day 80s that was meent for N/A cars. I bought one and plan to use it on my build 11.5 to 1 compression and 36-38 drgrees timing on 93 octain is nice

This is a really interesting thread. Now I know what water-injected system is. I have a clear idea of it now.
