Gt Dan,i read an article one time in MM&FF that said always try to match these componients as close as possable,so if your using a 70mm TB a 75mm MAF would be fine if the engine is set up to use this much airflow. But all the forums i have ever read seem to be that people using the bgiger MAF like 80mm and smaller TB had real good results::
Its like a funnel effect. If you blow through a straw with the big end(MAF)in your mouth and the small end away from you,the air comming out will be faster and headed in a straight direction, but if you reverse the straw and you blow through the small end the air coming out will be slower and will be dispursed all over the place and not guided in any direction(to much tubulence going into you intake)This is what hurts perfomence. You need a faster direct airflow into your intake. So if you increase the TB(which i have read and experinced that a 70mm TB is to big for a 302 that isnt stroked or has big H/C/I.Because that is a big hole that is putting to much uncontrolled air(turbulence) into the intake that isnt being used up fast enough.
I hope this isnt to confusing to you but you have to consider keeping the airflow into the intake as tight as possable, like i said alot of air going in is good on the MAF side but it has to tightened up and straightend out as much as possable on the TB end and not be too much for the engine capabilities of air usage or the turbulence will kill your perfomence.
