Default How do you size a turbo?

How would you size a turbo, to ensure you pick the right one and minimize lag, if the application spectrum is so broad? For instance I have been going back and forth on which one to get. (SC or Turbo) Let's say turbo for this thread because today I'm leaning that way. Now my suspension will be set up for track racing. I would also like to drag it in the 1/4 mile once in awhile. But primarily this car will be used for weekend joy rides around town. My motor with the mods currently is putting down roughly 285 to the wheels. I would imagine by the time I get the turbo it would be somewhere around 300hp to the wheels plus or minus 20hp. It's still a stock block until the motor's blown. But the motor is healthy. I have 180K and have babied it since 60K. Never raced it, nor drove it really hard. Typically this car has been shifted between gears at 2500rpm throughout 95% of its life. Now when the motor does go, I have plans to stroke the motor. I believe 331 is the correct one. (you guys know what I mean if the number isnt right. The lower of the two. Not 347) One other future plan after suspension, braking ability, then turbo, is NOS. With this being said. How can I plan for sizing the right turbo to minimize lag? In reference to size, what is size? What does that mean? And what in your opinion, would you recommend for my future plans? Thanks for taking the time to read my short story. I appreciate the helpful insight.

Well from what I understand a smaller turbo will spool up faster, thus less lag...a supercharger typically has almost no lag as it runs right off the crank...a supercharger is probably easier to install than the turbo, since the turbo requires all the exhaust work/fab...you can size the turbo/supercharger based on the internals of your block...if it's stock about 6psi is about all it can take..when you build your 331 build it for boost and then you can up the output of your power adder...don't forget, a good tuner is needed to make sure any hybrid system is ready to run hard and fast without expensive lessons being learned in the process...good luck, have fun with it

So let me see if I understand this right. When talking about sizing a turbo, its not the actual size of the turbo, its referencing the boost?

If this is correct. Is the boost adjustable? Because if I can only handle 6psi now, then say 12psi later down the road after a new build, can use the same turbo and adjust the boost. Or do you buy a 6psi turbo, and then buy another turbo rated at 12psi when the time comes?

could I help you out with a link. It is way to much to type out and it can make your head hurt LOL read the link then ask questions The Turbo Forums.com and then this one http://www.theturboforums.com/turbotech/main.htm... now remember not everything is set in stone with advances in turbo design.. It is a lot for the head and some may take a few times of reading to get it all.
