Default mount my turbo's at the front or rear of my stang?

hey fella's i just picked up a garrett twin turbo kit and had a quick question. I have my turbo headers to mount the two turbo's up front under the hood, but i was thinking of running them at the back of the car by the exaust, what method do you think would be better ? it just sounds sick when rear mounted, i dont drive in the rain MUCH, so i dont mind that the air filter is under there and if i do decide to put them at the rear i could put them in the trunk or make a protective cover if i decide to put them under the car, i know the air would be a lot cooler if i ran them from the rear but i am just worried about spooling, have anyone put one of these systems in the rear or heard anything pos/neg about rear mounted turbo's? thanks in advance!!

if you already had the headers then i would do it up front.

The rear mounted turbos would run cooler, and then you could run regular headers. You would just have to worry about undercar clearance, both to the road and the underside of the car.
But then you have all that piping that'll add weight.

thanks for the input guys, well yeah the kit i bought came with the turbo headers but i dont mind re-selling them to get some extra cash to pay for some 30pound injectors and a nice cam. I was thinking of mounting one at the front and one at the rear, i just love how it sounds at the back, i dont mind the extra work or piping because i would most likely be doing the work in my garage during the winter so i wont be driving the car anyways just planning ahead. if i dont have enough clearance underneath the car i can just put one of them in the trunk just for the cooler air, let me know what you guys thinking about one up front and one in the rear, i dont think that should cause any problems other than the extra work thanks in advance !

You should just mount the turbos in the same general area. It would make things alot easier. You could def make a rear kit work with the right headers.
I just dont like the rear mount cuz i really dont see the gains from it.

If you want a rear mount kit, I would purchase it as such. The rear mount kits are not as efficient and you would have to address getting oil to and from your rear mount kit. You would have to purchase a pump and deal with the logistics of properly setting it up.....

I think a turbo setup in the engine bay looks sexy......

squires turbo systems (STS) Squires Turbo Systems - Turbocharged Innovation! sells the complete rear mount kit. it makes great power. I have a friend who mounted one on his transam. it was quite a fun ride. the nice things about it are decreased plumbing under the hood, decreased heat under the hood, and the built in innercooling effect of the longer intake. the boost level is still controlled by the blow off valve so for the most part your boost levels do not change. I have not ridden in too many turbo vehicles so I can't comment on boost lag. all I can say is that it was a fun ride. about the only down side is that you do need an electric oil pump and you need to run oil lines. and of course more tubing.

put them up front. lag will be a issue in the rear. don't forget heat is energy with a turbo system and with the turbos being so far back and exhaust gasses cooling down that is just a waste of power. as far as sound when they spool up you will hear them just fine trust me. I would just leave the rear mounts for the cars that really need them there. IMO

I admit to not being a turbo expert but I would have to disagree with that statement. heat kills turbos. heat is the single biggest issue in the power you can make with a turbo. hence intercoolers. the exhaust gas passing the turbo is what makes the boost, and the more heat you can remove from the intake air the better. read up on some of the information on squires system before you make a decision because there is a lot of wrong information being put out. from what I have read and what my friend Keenan who actually owns and helped develop one of these squires systems says there is very little turbo lag. again I am no expert but read the info on there website and It might make a believer out of you. the one Stacey David installed on Old Smoke on gearz tv sure didn't seem to have much lag.

^^^^^ .. Yes, exhaust gas make the turbo spool they do not make boost. yes, heat is energy. With a engine being hot as the exhaust gases come out hot they have more energy and velocity they expand. as the cool they start to slow down and constrict and lose velocity lose energy. now the father the turbo is away from the engine the more the gasses lose heat and energy and velocity. I have been around rear mount turbo drag cars they just did not work very good. could it been some of there design maybe but it only make sense that the farther away the turbo is the longer it is gone to take to spool the exhaust is losing energy the farther away from the engine you get. putting very small housings on the turbine side of the turbo may help this but then they can become a restriction at higher RPM. Now as the CID increases then the rear mounts would work better I would think due to larger amounts of air/Energy being moved but then I still think back to having to run a larger turbo for the bigger CID now we will be back to a lag issue again then back to the smaller turbine housing and then the turbo becoming a restriction at high rpms again. I didn't say that rear mounts did not work I just don't think they work as good as they would if all else being the same and the turbo was only 1ft from the engine. I don't claim to know it all when it comes to turbo cars or design either but I do own one and I do spend lots of time working on them. So maybe you should read up a bit more yourself. as for reading a article or watching a TV show. Yea right like I would believe that. LOL.. also intercoolers are use to cool the compressed air because when you compress air it gets hotter. also cooler air is denser and you could fit more in the cylinders by cooling it. also due to the air being compressed and it heating up it can make the air charge temps. to high and cause detonation easier... maybe wrong maybe not.

Ya heat is a killer with turbos, i am a mechanical engineer and taking heat transfer i have come to know a few things. I believe STS has something going on with rear mounting the turbos. The only reason their values are not as big in the boost is the fact they run smaller turbos. Besides heat wrap or ceramic coating will keep heat in if its that big of issue.
