We noticed a performance drop. At the time we didn't think it was a head gasket. We just thought that I was getting use to it and it was all in my head. One day, while going to work, I was being harassed by a C5 Vette and decided I had enough and nailed it leaving it behind. Shortly after the temp sky rocketed and then she blew white smoke out the back.
So my initial sign was a lost in power. It blew from the cylinder into the lifter galley. It had run like this for some time. A leak down test would have shown this by blowing air out of the oil filler neck. After a while longer it finally blew through to the coolant passage.
If you suspect a head gasket, do a leak down test
