Default Turbo on a carburated engine

Not for sure if this is the right place to post this but its my first post. Can it be done? I've been searching the internet and other areas but havn't found much material. I know quite abit about turbos on diesel pickups but not very much of fuel injected gas engines. Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks,

John

Yes it can be done . All you need is a carb bonnet / hat .And a boost referenced fuel pressure regulator

Well there are a few other things that would be quite helpful. But there isn't really a whole lot too it.

I meant those sre the only 2 things needed that you dont normally think about . the rest of it is basically just a turbo install . they also have special carb gaskets for blow through setups with high boost .

The carb would have to be modified for boost. The floats have to be changed for sure, and a few other things as well.

An MSD BTM box would also be a good idea.

I'm thinking about this setup on my '70 Mach1. I'm building this car more for road race/street and an occasional drag race, so I'm not sure how far to go. Single or twins? I can fab up most of the piping for the turbo(s) myself but need a little more info as far the bonnet, blow-thru carb, etc.. Thanks for the help.

I found this on e-bay . It looked like it would be worth looking into something like this

Fordgazm,

Cool looking piece, I will need some help deciding which turbo to use. Are the Garrett GT series turbos any good on gas engines? On our diesel engines the Garrett turbos are junk, major surge problems, broken turbo shafts, etc. How is the bonnet attached to the carb? Anybody got any pics of a turbo(s) on a carburated engine preferably Ford but it doesn't matter? I would just like to get an idea on how to fab all the tubing for it. Thanks for the help.

You could also use Vortech's enclosed carb setup like this SBC kit uses

http://www.vortechsuperchargers.com/...ode=4GA218-020

I'm sure they would sell the enclosure separately.

Tony,

Don't the superchargers rob hp to make more hp? That is why I've been thinking of a turbo from the start.

I didn't mean to use the SC, just the carb enclosure that is shown in the kit.

You would enclose your carb with Vortechs enclosure then run your plumbing from the turbo, or turbos, to the enclosure. This enclosure acts like a pressure chamber with the carb inside. Since you would have pressure all around the inside and outside of the carb there is no need to build the carb to blow thru.

Tony,

I must of misunderstood you, how hard is it to fab your own enclosure? Which is best enclosure or bonnet with a blow-through carb? Would a single or twin turbo setup be best for my application? What brand of turbo(s) would you recommend? Sorry for all the questions but I'm new to the turbo-charged gas engines.

John

I couldn't tell you which is best and only you know your fab skills. My fab skills are pretty good. As for which turbo? I like the Garrett GT series, ball bearings and water cooled! Twin or single, it is up to you. A twin setup will spool faster with less turbo lag. My twin Garretts come to full boost around 25-2800rpm
