Default Turbo Questions

now, i am wondering, can you get any turbo say from a VW or the old SVOs and modify them to fit a mustang? just buy the turbo and get someone to make all your piping and all. And second:

how the hell does Boost control work. is there a comuter in the turbo or can you do this to any one?

Thanks everyone.

Check out this website and their Junkyard Turbo section there
turbomustangs.com

Plenty of reading and a whole lot of info on what to get and where to look for parts too.

You need turbos that are the right size for a Mustang, VW turbos are small, not even 2 of them will be enough.
Some pretty common turbos for Twin setups are from the SVOs, Saabs, and other cars that have at least half the displacement of a 5.0.
Single junkyard turbos are most commonly found in some trucks.

Check our Turbo-How to series:

Boost control: You use something called a BLOW OFF valve, which at a certain boost pressure will release some of the boost to the atmosphere. You can attach an electronic or manual boost controller to the valve, and this provides adjustabiliy at your fingertips.

i built a twinturbo mustang.......i believe on my set up, my wastegates control my boost pressure....i have a manual control which basically bypasses the wastegates till you hit the pressure you desire, then the wastegate will open up, dumping the extra exhaust to the atmosphere.......my blow off valve is used to ensure that my turbo's don't spin backwards when i let off the gas under boost.......it blows the compressed air to the atmosphere............we have alot of information at turborides.com

Stand corrected, WASTEGATES control the boost, not the blow off valve.

A boost controller is nothing something to take lightly. I could just see someone getting ready for a race and turn it up one too many lbs and start breaking stuff. Only go to what you know your internals can handel.

you can buy a kit that is specific to your 4 banger or you can attempt to build your own set up, which is what i would do, just be sure to do some reading first and get some understanding of how turbo systems work on our car's..........hotwheels of turborides.com
