Default Supercharger Question

Hello,

I have a question about supercharging a 5.0L mustang...I own a 90' convertible with 130K miles on her...She runs great, except for "spark knock" at times which I have called Ford about and they said it was "normal", which I am not sure I agree with but whatever...It is completely stock and in very good mechanical condition...My questions are:

1. I am looking at this Paxton supercharger but my question is even though my motor has 130K miles would it still be ok to add this kit:

http://www.paxtonauto.com/systems.as...t&Part=1001830

First off I should also state that I don't WOT my car ever...I rarely take it passed 2K normal driving and if I want to hit it at all, I am still easy with applying the gas but will let her climb to about 3-3.5K on the tach...The only reason I mention this is in case you might think I want this to WOT the car at every stop light with a supercharger...I mainly want it b/c I've always wanted to have a supercharged car, mostly for fun, and talking about it and stuff, but I would still like to feel some power gain...I just am not one of the guys that hammers their car, I've never been that way...I had a 93 LT1 Corvette for a while and did it once when a gave in to a Cobra's advances at a stop light...I felt guilty for a month! Anyway I just want to know if it would be ok considering the age/mileage factor...I've read all the FAQ's on the site about engine reliability and know that really it is more how you drive the car then just if you have a charger on it..but I wanted to get your all's opinion...

2. How difficult is it to install in your opinion...I've downloaded the instructions, and it seems straight forward, but I've never done one before...I am mechanically inclined, I do most/all my own repairs, (water pumps, oil changes, starters, fuel pumps, and even a clutch once), but I don't want to spend 2100.00 and get in way over my head...

3. I don't remember seeing it on the website, but would I need to have a much higher volume fuel pump, to keep up with the increase in air volume, or would the stock pump work...If I did leave the stock pump what would it damage the engine or just result in poor performance???...Is there any other upgrades I would have to do????

Thanks for all your help, my Mustang is my pride and joy, I really want to get one of these but this board has never steered me wrong in advice...Any help is appreciated!!!

Thanks,

Jason

I think it is an OK kit for your car as long as you keep the boost at 6 psi.

That paxton kit uses a FMU (fuel management unit) to raise the fuel pressure at the injectors when it sees boost, this setup works ok with your stock injectors and pump as long as you dont raise the boost pressure (with a smaller pulley).

The only drawback of a FMU is that the pressure is not 100% under control (operates by vaccum). FMUs tend to run the engine on the rich side so you might experience reduced MPG.

My recommendation is to install the kit yourself, it is really not hard, might take you a couple of days.

But, after you do, take the car for a tuneup session at a dyno. A good shop will be able to tell you if its running rich or lean and adjust the FMU accordingly.

It is also a good idea to use COLDER plugs (try 1 step colder first) with a closer electrode gap. And wont hurt to improve the ignition system a bit, at least by using a better coil from MSD, ACCEL, etc.

One last thing, superchargers do create more strain and heat, so make sure your cooling system is at 100%, install a 180° balanced thermostat, have the radiator flushed and install a new radiator cap, if needed also change both upper and lower hoses.

One last note, if you want to get the most out of the kit, install a new fuel pump, larger injectors and a CUSTOM calibrated chip. This will replace the FMU with 100% electronic management by the EEC.

Doing this allows you to tune the car more efficiently, will run smoother, higher HP and with better MPG.

The calibration of the chip has to be done on a DYNO for better results.

Why get a supercharger if you never stand on your pony? I'm not bashing, just curious.

It took me 14 hours to do the supercharger on my car. I didn't have to tap the oil pan because the compressor is self contained. I had a lot of piping to run and had to mount the intercooler (that was a pain in the butt). It should take a lot less time to do on your 5.0 then on my car.

I agree with everything rob said. But you also might want to consider getting some gauges to moniter what is happening to your car. They also add to the cool factor, which I believe is what you are going for.

don't worry about it, i'm not offended, I appreciate the help...As I explained it is more just b/c I have always wanted to have one, and b/c of the wow factor just for me...If I was to really live by the theory of "why want power you don't really often use..." I would drive a tempo...which I did back in school hehehe ...to me it is more about working on the car and wow factor...not actually stomping it I guess...that might not make sense to many people, also this kit didn't appear to have any kind of intercooler...I figured since it was engine driven and not run off of exhaust gas it didn't need one...but I may be wrong, I am a real newbie when it comes to this supercharging stuff...

Also, I found the above kit at:

http://www.neweraperformanceparts.com/default.asp?S=503&A=E&PKV=PAX1001830|0

for 1700.00...Is this a good price, paxton's website says it retails for over 2k...But want to make sure I'm not getting screwed...

Thanks,

Jason

I bought mine at www.musclemotors.com . my car has 120,000 miles and it runs great with the blower. Mine took 20 hours to install. check out my gallery for the install pics. also, I paid 1,700 for it. not gonna find a better deal since that was the total price shipped to me.
