Default 1983 3.8L V6 help

Well I can't really find a forum for Mercury Capri's but since they are extremely similar to the Mustang, I though you guys might be able to help me out a bit.

Like the thread topic says I have a 1983 3.8L Capri that was willed to me when my step-grandmother passed... it only has 38K miles on it so it's pretty new, but it doesn't run like it.

We have rebuilt the carb, done hotter spark plugs, new ignition system, and stuff with the all the air polution garbage that I wont explain. This has all helped a little here and their but nothing significant.

I still get around 11-12 mpg and it's basically still a slug. So here I am asking you, what ignition system(not stock), exhaust systems, intank manifolds and carbs can I install for a reasionable price that will increase my horsepower/efficiency.

Thank you,
Michael

What's your budget?

there's not much for pre-94 3.8Ls, as the internals aren't very strong. I don't remember when they started with the DIS system, so I can't really say what type of ignitioin will work. For that information, send Mustang TK a PM.

The heads and intake off of a 99+ car will give you the best flow and hp numbers, and they will bolt on. Morana has a carb conversion for modern intakes, so that would be the best route for you.

re: power adders . . . Don't. not unless you're using a modern short block.

So getting heads off of a 3.8l 6cyl from 1999-05 would increase my performance the most.

Any link to the carb conversion please?

Budget is tight, but not limited to any ammount yet.
Basically I need a new carb/intake manifold. While I'm at it I would like to make my car a little bit faster/more economic since the gas prices are rising.

Thanks,
Michael

I'd take the cams, too!, but if you're going OEM, the 94-8 cams have a hotter grind than the 99+.

Otherwise, go competition cams.

Morana or supersix can fix you up with whatever you need. . ..

So where do I order the Morana Kit for this job and what carb/intake manifold would bolt on to a stock set up to increase perfomance?

Like I said It's not ever going to be a street machine with this engine... Maybe in years down the road I may thing about the 5.0 in it but not at the moment.

Thanks, Michael

EDIT I found out that you order from that site.

The block is the same. I'll see if I can find a chronology for you.

In any case you'll need a modern set of heads (which are cheap, BTW) and lower intake.

You can order the adapter from Morana, for a carbed application.

here's the 3.8L chronology

I take that back, it looks like there are a few differences in the blocks as well . . . .

Not that familiar with the pre-89 3.8s.

I'd just consult with super six or morana.

Heck, blocks are cheap, as well. the newer blocks are a lot more stout.

I've seen low mileage complete engines sell for $300 . . .
