looking for input regarding screw type blowers, in particular kenne bell
i am seriously thinking of getting a kenne bell supercharger. it seems to fit my particular style of driving. it is supposed to have good low and midrange power. my car is a daily driver, and for the most part i rarely go above 3000 rpm, except to merge on the freeway. It woul be nice to have power down low where i drive, instead of having to slam the accelerator to the floor. i would like to know how you like it, how it works for you, and any problems you may have encountered. by the way, i'm not looking for more than about 9lb of boost..

I dont have one, but i have owned cars with screw type blowers, and they are a blast to drive since you have almost INSTANT boost.
KB has great reputation, cant go wrong with their superchargers.
Only problem i see, is you having 3.73 gears, might be a bit steep for a KB
I just put one on my 99 Lightning. Have not run it long enough, but so far I 'm happy with it.
It will instantly pop up to 8psi and build to 12psi very quickly. With a very conservative tune, I have 125k on the L, we put 397rwhp and 443rwtq. I'm sure with leaning it out a bit with some more timing we would be in the 410rwhp range.
Oh! And it makes the most bitchen sound, especially in the upper rpm range. On the dyno we had to plug our ears, it was so cool! :thumbsup
Rob's right! You need to have it tuned

yeah i hear from you guys the procharger crazy at building up the power. but, doesn't the power kick in at a higher rpm range. I have an aod, and spend my time down in the low-mid rpm range. i think the hard part for me is going to find a person to do the tune. I don't know of any place in my area yet i can get a tune. i am probably going to take a road trip to LA or Bay area to get it installed and tune. hey JUSTNLX where did you go?

oh yeah... if i go with the KB should i go back to the stock 3:27?
Than in that case the Kenne Bell is right for you.You should be
fine with 3.73's.Go to kennebell.net and reseach.Kennebell produces
great quality blowers just as will as Procharger.Good Luck though.
The Kenne Bell for you is the 1.7 unit. It produces up to 14psi (starts at about 8), so you have some growing room if you opt to turn up the volume. The kit with intercooler is about $6000, and includes one of their Boost-A-Pumps and a set of 24# injectors, new fuel rails, etc.
Best all-around screw-type kit I know of (unless you want to go wild and get their 2.2 unit, which will really put you in orbit).
The centrifugal chargers are fine, but the low-end gains you're after best come with a screw-type unit.
i think the hard part for me is going to find a person to do the tune.
According to KB's website, if you are handy you can install it yourself. (I'm planning on doing this myself later this summer when some $ free up) As long as you are going with the 1.7L blower, it comes with the preprogrammed chip that they provide for you after you provide them w/what accy's you have on your car and the numbers off of your car's computer.
Been reading ALOT about it lately as I just have to have it!!!
I have the Kenne Bell 1.7L non-intercooled kit on my 00 GT. It was easy to install. It took about 14 hours for myself and one friend. I've only ever installed my own bolt on's, so I would not consider myself that experienced around car modifications. As far as the tune. Kenne Bell sends a chip that you install in the ECU. The tune they send is based on what mods you have and is conservative. My tune ran perfect from the start. I did have the car dyno'd to verify that my air/fuel mix was safe all the way to redline. It was around 12:1 and stable the whole way up. If you get the switch chip option, they will send two tunes, one conservative and one for track use, which has more timing and leaner fuel mixes. But higher octane is recommended for that. I only run 94 octane and an 8# pulley as my daily driver. I have a 10# pulley that I will use at the track. I also have the 6# that came with the kit, but like the 8#. THe more power the better.
I have 3.73 gears too. Traction is challanging in 1st gear and 2nd can be if you shift too hard. And if torque is what you want, that is what you'll get. No waiting for it to build. I compared my buddy's dyno pull and mine on video. He runs an 01 cobra with a 14psi Vortec, intercooled kit. he also has 3.73 gears and is pushing 500 rwhp, mines at 375 rwhp. On the dyno you can see the difference in torque in the power band. His revs starting at 2000 rpm like it's stock. It revs slowly and then around 4800rpm you can hear and see it start taking off and it pulls like crazy the rest of the way up. Mine begins pulling hard at 2000 rpm. No waiting for torque, it revs up quickly right away.
Low torque is great. Mine puts down over 332 lb-ft of rear wheel torque from 2200 rpm all the way to redline. It peaks at 362 lb-ft at 4300 rpm. So, 332 lb-ft at 2200 rpm is equal to about 390 lb-ft at the flywheel. It's nuts having that much torque down that low.
Hey JSTER91 cool info... Do you have a dyno sheet i could see? Do you have any other mods to your car? that 375rwhp is that from the 8# pulley? have you dynoed te 10#?

Here is the dyno graph. The red lines are prior to installing the kit. That was just the x-pipe and cat back. I also have a dyno graph with all the bolt on's up until last fall when I had to take some of them off to put on the KB kit. That dyno graph showed 258 rwhp and 300 rwtq. But installing the KB kit, it replaced the C&L upper intake, autologic dyno tuned chip and pulleys.
Here it is...
This is the 8psi pulley on 94 octane with a can of NOS Red octane booster. The tune is only the one that come on the Kenne Bell chip. I did not have the car tuned. KB's tune is conservative. I'm sure I could squeak another 10 or so HP out of the 8# pulley with a dyno tune.
I haven't dyno'd the 10# yet. I expect about 25 more horses at the rear.
