I know, I know this isn't really "Mustang" tech, but I figure you guys know more than anybody about how to make one of these 5.0's run like a scalded dog. I've got an 87' 5.0 HO in my Jeep that I use Rockcrawling. I had been a diehard chevy fan all of my life, but a friend of mine talked me into putting one of these in my jeep. Boy was I surprised at what these little motors will do. That thing will really get it when I need some quick power for ledge climbs. I had it bored .20 over, balanced, and converted it to the Mass Air system. Those are the only mods that have been done to it.
My question is this. What mods can you recommend for me to hop it up a little more. While I normally need good off idle power, I also need to really get it turned up from time to time for better wheel speed. I've considered a bigger throttle body and injectors, and I've also considered a supercharger. What can you recommend? Thanks in advance for any help/guidance.
I'm running an NP435 tranny (6:69 1st, 3:34 2nd, 1:79 3rd, 1:00 4th), a 4:1 tranfer case, and 4:56 in the axles. THose numbers probably don't do you a bit of good since we aren't talking about top end speed. With the Jeep being geared that low, first gear is extremely low(barely moves), 2nd gear is only a little better with just a hair more wheel spin, when I really need to launch up a ledge I dump the clutch in 3rd at about 3.5k rpm and let it eat.
So in your opinion the Kenne Bell Superchargers are probably the best for low end?
Its ok, you gave me the info I was looking for, which was the ratio of the ones in the axle. If jeep has the option to replace that one with a numerically higher gear look into it, it will allow you spin the tires even faster.
It doesnt have to be a KB unit but a positive displacement blower (Kenn Bell, Whipple, etc.) will allow you to be at boost the fastest. As opposed to a centrifugal (Vortech, Pro-Charger etc.)
The Positive displacements fall under two basic catagorys Twin Screw and Roots. They both replace the upper manifold, the difference is that the twin screws are more effecient.
They run cooler and make a little more hp at the same boost levels.
A Kenn Bell is a good choice though, I just wanted you to know that it wasnt the only choice.
