Default Twist on a charger

Ok so here is a question I was pondering last night before I was able to pass out. Why do they make Superchargers that connect directly to the engin via pully which drains 5 or so HP instead of getting a outside power source for it? EX. Have a small electric engin hook up to the battery and that drives the S/C? Personally I am a Turbo fan but something I thought about to pass time.

Peace all,

The power behind a supercharger makes up for the pulley loss... besides, that way, it is matched with the engine... if you have an electric motor, it will be too much or too little boost depending on the varying motor rpms, and then you're just shooting yourself in the foot.. you want as much crammed into the cylinder as possible without problems, and since all motors are different picking a motor for all applications just isnt feasable.

To use an electric motor powerful enough to spin a blower fast enough would still cost you at least 5hp. Plus the added cost of up-grading the charging system to handle it

They already have electric centrifagal style superchargers. The one I saw is capable of 5psi, and is commonly used on RV's.

Well, I'm not all that up on how much hp it takes to run a Vortec or a Kenne Bell but I'm pretty sure its quite a bit more than just 5hp. With that said I work with electric motors alot and do you have any idea how big a 5hp motor is? Finding room to mount a motor like that or even lets say a 10 or 15hp electric motor would be a PITA.

5 or so HP haha, it takes a lot more than that . Do you know how fast the motor has to spin it? It also depends on how efficient the compressor is. I'd say more like 30-40HP.

Imagine an electric one though...would be interesting. I'd put one of those leaf blowers in my car! Yeah! That would be cool! I think the main reason why they don't have an electric motor driving is because when you accelerate...how can you get an electric motor to react as quickly as your car motor? Your boost wouldn't be proportionate to the rpms of the car motor.

The amount of power it takes to spin the blower on a Hemi Funny Car is more than the Chrysler Hemi made stock ( in other words more than 425 HP just to turn the blower).
It takes way more than 5 HP to spin a Vortech or likewise blower.

Yeah, but think of the amount of boost Funny Cars are running. They are also using true compressor type superchargers so that sucks even more horsepower. They are running so much boost that their compression ratios are 4.0:1!
