Hey Guys,
I read the "noob supercharger" post and got a lot of great advice...I really need some help though on answering these questions...Some background...I have a 90 LX Conv. 5.0 7-up car with 130,000 miles, great condition, stock except for exhaust, it has been cared for and not abused...It leaks a tiny bit of oil from somewhere, i think behind the block...that's it, it runs great starts everytime, etc....I REALLY, REALLY want to supercharge it with a Paxton Novi 1000 system...And before I ask my questions I want to say that I don't "beat" on this car...I don't think I never have WOT it before, so i drive it fairly easy...With that said let me also say that I know some of you will respond "Then why even spend the money supercharging it is you don't get on it ever????", the answer is b/c I want to, i'm not out to drag race the car, just to have a little more fun factor and and a bigger smile to my face when I do put the pedal down a little...Ok, now on to the questions:
1. I read in the other post, so i know it is safe to supercharge my higher mileage engine b/c this kit only produces about 5-6psi...However I do hear some detonation if I am on the car at all, Ford says this is "sparknock" and it is normal and even the new Cobras do it...I think this answer is BS!...I need to check the timing as I believe someone has far advanced the timing b/c I am running 93 octane and sometimes it still does it under a good load, not bad, but it is there...question-Is some of this normal in 5.0's? Does there absolutely have to be none of this present with a supercharger, (and I know detonation is bad, the only reason i'm asking is b/c Ford mechanics claim some is normal) or is just a little ok???
2. I know to get the best performance out of this supercharger I would want to upgrade the fuel pump/injectors/intake/headers/etc. etc., but can I still at least install it and have a little fun with it completely stock like mine is (execpt for exhaust)...I know the system comes with an fmu, I just need to know if I can still play with it while budgeting for all the other stuff without having to shell out a lot more cash for all the other stuff up front...(and to those of you that think this is ridiculous, remember not all of us have/want to throw thousands and thousands at a car to make it the fastest in the state, or lay thousands of dollars in ground work when all I want is the supercharger itself...I know this is the "best" solution to have everything new and perfect, but all that stuff can cost as much as the supercharger itself or a lot more, and all I want it the boost feeling that it gives, not so I can beat everyones car in the county, but rather just for the fun/experience of installing my very own supercharger)
3. How did most of you justify spending this much cash for a supercharger
I know I posted a similar thread a while ago, but these questions weren't specifically addressed...
Thanks for any replies,
