Default Turbo motor help

Hey everyone glad to be apart of this great site!! Well about a week ago I blew the motor on the dodge I drive day to day. ( threw a rod ) So its toast. I have been wanting a new car for a while but dont want a note. Some of you can relate I am sure. I work offshore and only drive about 5,000 miles a year. What I am thinking of doing is taking the insurance money and building a turbo motor for the stang its a 1991 lx. My father has raced for years but he is a chevy man and does not know much about the 302. ( sorry not everyones perfect ) Between the income tax check and the insurance money I should have about 8-12 thousand to blow. I am still young and dont have enought sence to save it. I have already replaced the tranny and I have axles so this should not be a problem with the power I want.

Ok here is my question to the turbo guys out here. In all seriousness I want to build a turbo motor thats going to make 750-1000hp and wont break all the time. I know lower compression the better and the strongest of everything I can get. But what about cam, head, and the other parts of the valvetrain, along with anything else that I may have to worry about. I want to build this motor myself and need any help you may be willing to share. Also because this will be my primary car ( aside from the girlfriends ) I would like to keep my power stering and A/c. I am not sure if twins would be better of one large turbo. I would think twins would be less lagg but I dont know anything about turbo motors. Please any advice you may be willing to give would be a great help. First hand experince would be great!!

Sorry don't know much about turbo setups but I would go with twins and a custom blower grind on the cam. Check out turbomustangs.com they have lots of info there. Good luck, that's a lot of power to tame.

what ever you do don't go with a ball bearing turbo set up. Ball bearing turbos will spool way to quick if you are using a single turbo. If i were you i would contact an actual shop who builds turbos to design a turbo for your set up...they can also help you with cams you want to.

At 750-1000hp it would not be very streetable. It would not be a wet weather car that is for sure!

That kind of horsepower you are going to need a good block like the Ford racing R302 with four bolt mains or better. Compression around 8-8.5:1 would be good. Custom pistons are a must, no off the shelve piston will do. I had some custom Wiseco pistons made just for a turbo application. Rings were moved as far down the piston as possible to keep them away from the heat and gas ports were added. If you stroke it, no more than a 331ci after that the rings would not be able to be moved down on the piston. Forged bottom end.

Cams are fairly simple for turbo applications. Lobe seperation is important. Something around 112-116 deg. A stock 5.0 cam is good up to around 600-650 hp. I made 350 rwhp with a stock 5.0 and only 8psi boost. A good set of ported heads will help big time. Don’t just go hogging out the ports, Bigger is not always better. Keeping the exhaust velocity up is very important with a turbo. Intake side is not that important.

Keeping the p/s and A/C should not be a problem, but I don’t see this being an everyday car. Keeping it tuned would be an everyday job.

Why not ball bearing? Spooling up quick is the whole idea! A turbo like the Garrett GT series has ball bearings and is water cooled. Mine are modified GT35’s. I ran them for over a year with no problems. Of course the head gasket was another question.

I agree though, find a turbo shop or manufacture that will work with you. Your turbo setup should be matched with your engine and intended use

Read through this thread it has some great info on turbo:
