This is the old "Lincoln Locker" as known in 4x4 circles. If your car is going to be a track only go for it. If your car is a street car, I don't think I would recommend it. I have a Detroit Locker in my Toyota 4x4 and it is awesome offroad like a lincoln locker. On pavement a locked differential is a different animal. On ice, snow or wet pavement, a locker can get you killed. While an open differential provides an anchor tire when traction breaks (all power goes to the tire with no traction). A locker forces all power through both tires (hence 360 degree spins on the slick stuff). The other problem on the street is taking turns. When an open diff goes into a curve the inside tire must spin at a higher rate to keep up with the outside tire. A mechanical diff like a Detroit will allow this to happen as long as you are off the gas. A welded "Lincoln" will not allow the inside tire to spin any faster. At low speeds you get "chirping". At higher speeds to get unsafe/ impaired cornering ability. |
