Default 1996 GT 4.6l Completely Stock, What should I do first?

Hi,

I have a 1996 mustang gt 4.6l completely stock. What should i do first? I have been thinking about a k&n air filter and flow master mufflers. Any suggestions? thanks

everyone seems to agree with gears, i bought mine a while ago but waiting for more mods to get a package install deal. i went with 4.10's. i went the other way, headers, flows, h pipe and cai but i shouldve gone with gears first.

first put in a cold air intake kit, throttle body spacer. then let the engine breathe better with the exhaust upgrade-this is the path im taking.

I would do the gears and a programmer. You have a pathetic 2.73 rear gear in there. Throw in some 3.73s or 4.10s and you will notice a healthy difference in acceleration. The programmer would correct your speedometer and bump your timing. Expect to pay around $500 for the gears, install kit, and cost to have someone put them in for you. The programmer would be around $350-$425. OR..... you could upgrade to the PI heads and intake.

wow Hedgehog... thanks for the contribution.

I say CAI and flowmasters are a great start. Gears are also very nice. Problem with our Mustangs is that you have to get a new speedo gear, a tuner wont fix the gear change.
Good luck!

Find a used PI intake. I just saw one on ebay for about $140 but keep looking they can be had for less. Fairly easy install and very good bang for the buck. Do a search on how to fit PI intake on non-PI heads....

I also bought a stock 1996 gt. I added a Livernois PI to NPI kit and a C & l upper plenum. It ran very nicely when I used a superchips programmer. Then I installed an FRPP blower. So, all of the above are for sale.
