Default 1997 Crown Vic police interceptor v8 in a 2002 Mustang?

Ok, heres the situation.. I have a 2002 Mustang V6. not the fastest car on the planet. so i set out looking for a new engine.. my brother in law has a 97 crown victoria police interceptor. all the components are still good... the computer, tranny, all that. is it possible to install that into my mustang and would i need to change out the rear end? also what gears would be the most proficient if i am still using it for a daily driver? as well, would the tranny from the crown vic fit into the mustang?

Hiya, I see this is your first post. Welcome to the site.
The engine in the Crown will go right in your 2002. The gear selection would depend on the tranny, and I'm guessing it'd be an automatic since you want the Crown tranny in it. That'd go in too with no problem, you just need to swap the computer as well. I'd recommend a 3:73 gear for a good overall performance.

The other thing i am worried about is the Crown has not run in just over a year due to my brother in law and i's deployment to Iraq. it curently has 200,000 miles on it. is there anything i should do to the 4.6 prior to installing it into the mustang? just dont want to throw it in and have it not run or explode....

You could always purchase a rebuild kit and rebuild the motor before finishing the swap out. I helped a buddy of mine rebuild his 1987 5.0L in the mid 90s between semesters at college. It wasn't nearly as hard as I thought it would be because his father owned a garage and had all the right tools to get the job done. Before that, my only experience with rebuilding motors was helping my grandfather rebuild his 1979 Ford truck engine and helping my grandfather with his circa 1930s Alis Chambler tractor engine rebuild. Fast forward to today and I don't even change my own oil anymore

Default Come to find out

well i just learned that the motor was rebuilt at about 150,000 miles. so the motor should be good. was kind of wary about the long sit. the next thing that was brought to my attention was the computer. in chevys when u replace a computer or motor, the computer has to be reset at a dealership, usually costing aroung 1000 dollars. is Ford the same way? again i appreciate any help or advice given. and if you can think of anything i might need to replace or buy to complete this install properly, just let me know. thanks guys

Why would you have to reset the computer? You should be able to clear any codes with a code reader, or just by lifting a battery terminal.

I'm off to the sandbox soon myself, my mods have to wait til I get back too.

Many cop cars have 3.55 gears, with or without a limited slip. If your car has an 8.8 you might be able to drop them in.
Good Luck!

Randy

Why wouldn't he be? 4.6L from a crown vic, compared to a 3.8L V6?

You'll also need a new driveshaft and your differential may not be able to handle the... 225hp? Hopefully your axles can but if not, maybe go to the pull-n-save and find a complete one, from a GT, there.
