Default Gauges and superchargers continued

This was discussed in a thread last week, regarding what gauges are essential with running a supercharger. There were alot of conflicting answers.

I am for certain going to have a boost pressure gauge. In a two gauge cluster then I am thinking fuel pressure, the electric fuel pressure gauges are around $200. Is a mechanical fuel pressure gauge not sufficient?

The mechanical gauge allows the gas that's under such pressure to enter the interior of the car and you really don't want that. It's not safe to do, and if you'd be in an accident that line could rupture and douse you in gasoline. That's why most go outside of the car and not inside. The electric is only a wire to the gauge and is why it costs so much.

Yeah I thought about that. Nothing like having gasoline piped right into the cockpit!

Yup. You can have a mechanical but it should be mounted outside on the cowl.

What are your thoughts on having Air/fuel ratio gauge. Do you have to go with the wideband O2 sensor?

I think you do. An air/fuel ratio gauge is good to have, you can see what it is through out the rev range, not just at idle. If you see it's ok at idle but goes lean when it revs up, then you could get a computer tune or a chip burned to address that. And you would know if it went lean all of a sudden, even after the tune. A pump could fail and you'd know it before it caused damage.

If you wanna use a mechanical fuel guage there is a unit that transferes the pressure via diaphram from gas to antifreeze, and then enters the car. Autometer makes em, but they are kinda junky, ive lost 2 gauges in the past 2 years, i think air bubbles are in the lines and when it gets really hot it just ruins the gauges. And the diaphram thing is expensive!!!
eBay Motors: AUTOMETER Ultra-Lite 2 5/8" MECH Fuel Pressure Gauge NR (item 220172024844 end time Nov-16-07 16:45:01 PST)

Definatelly go with the electric, that previous bit was just an FYI.

As for the A/F ratio this is all you need, then hook it into a single wire sensor somewhere. eBay Motors: Autometer Ultra-Lite 2 1/16" Gauge Air/Fuel 4375 (item 170167276028 end time Nov-15-07 07:16:13 PST)
