At first glance it does seem kind of stupid but there is a reason for it. Once members reply to a post, it prevents the originating post from being edited to the point where all other subsequent posts are then meaningless or worse still, open to being taken out of context. Here is a mild example: If you reply to a members post that is argumentive on a given topic and then the original poster edits his post to change his position. Your reply, as well as all others, could then be completely meaningless or seemingly out of place. While it may seem a little inconvenient, the forums are set up in this way to ensure the integrity of the thread and the posts you reply to.

I was on another forum and the next day came back to read my replies and WHOA! I had like 8 typos, I had to be pretty drunk, fixed em up before I looked like a 10 year old posting. Had a good laugh after re-reading it.
