Jim, I am not sure exactly what caused your upload problem but suspect where you had just joined as a new member, it is probably one of the following two things that caused your picture upload problem:
1) When you attempted to upload the photo, system checks your membership status to ensure you are a registered member. Where you had just joined, you may not have already responded to the confirmation email sent to you, to confirm your account and change your account status to "registered member".
2) Your login cookie may not have been active, requiring you to log into the system using your new member account and password. This is most likely what happened.
In either case, you should now be able to upload pictures to your photo gallery. Just make sure you are logged in first. Your member name should appear on the top right hand portion of the screen, below our main site navigation links. If not is not simply signin and away you go
