I didn't know you had to run 12" or smaller rotors and only 2-piston calipers. But, thinking about the generalities of the rules that most things remain stock, that makes sense.

Mike-the wheel size is limted to 16X8 with a max tire size of 255/50/16. There is precious little clearance for anything bigger. Again, it's up to the driver not to cook the brakes!

Check. Do you actually have pads remaining after a 40-minute race? How long do the rotors last you?

Mike, I own two Mustangs:

My 1989 Mustang Coupe is a 5.0, 5 speed which I now am building for open track racing.

My 1992 Mustang Convertible is a 5.0 with a Lentech Automatic transmission. While the engine is basically stock I have made a number of upgrades elsewhere. Here is a list of modifications to date: Modifications List

I have also purchased but not yet installed Maximum Motorsports Torque Arm and front/rear coilover kit.

I am now thinking of installing a roll bar in my 92 Mustang Convertible so I can start off start taking HPDE school, pass the licensing test and then HPDE racing my 92 while finishing my 89 coupe.

What do you think? Would my 92 ragtop be OK for HPDE? I am worried about it being an automatic, even though it is a Lentec and wondering what else I would need to do before putting her on the track?

Mike-the pads last very well actually. Last year we ran the 87-93 front brakes: a single piston with an 11" rotor and Hawk blue pads. The pads would last 2-3 race weekends depanding on the track. The trick in our class is to keep momentum going as we don't have the big hammer like AI/AIX. This year the Baer kit shows more promise as I can spend about half the time on the brakes. Pad wear should be excellent.

A ragtop's O.K. as long as you have at least a 4-pt. roll bar. 6-pt. would be good, too. I've watched an AI racer in his ragtop streak across the finish line in pouring rain, waving his arms in ecstasy. You can do anything in a ragtop anytime you want.

For the tranny, let's see if someone else has an opinion.

Greg, is the 11" rotor a stock component? I have heard the stock rotors are very suseptable to warping.

That's more than I'd expect, but the only experience I have is with stock '97 Cobra pads on either stock or cryoed rotors. I finally cooked my first set of front pads on the short. back straight at Las Vegas. My car might have enough motor for AI but I'd want to upgrade the brakes if the rules would allow.

Scott-the 86 originally came with wimpy 10" rotors if you can believe it. In 87 they were changed to 11" with a larger single piston. The Baer kit is just that much better. I didn't warp the 11" rotors but they would fade a bit under heavy use. Not a good feeling I can assure you!

Mike-Mustangs must weigh 3,125 lbs. with driver minimum in CMC. That's probably a bit lighter than what you may be running.

Greg- Is the Baer kit you have installed a 4 or 5 lug setup. So far I have 11" 4 lub rotors on both my stangs and have upgraded the front calipers the 73mm aluminum SVO caliper and Hawk brake pads. I would be interested in the Baer kit you are referring to.

Gentlemen, I must sign off unfortunately. I am at work today at the firestation and I can't hog the computer all for myself. If anyone has any questions or comments, my email is robinsonmotorsport@hotmail.com. Feel free to check out the CMC website at www.camaromustangchallenge.com. Or www.nasaproracing.com for info on AI/AIX and other events like the HPDE program and other race classes.

Regards,

Greg
