American Iron Forum LAUNCH 3-27-03 at 12 Noon Pacific!!
HELLO, LADIES AND GETTLEMEN! This new Forum, American Iron®/Camaro Mustang Challenge, has a "Grand Opening" this coming Saturday, 3-29-03 at 12:00 Noon, Pacific time! To date 7 American Iron racers are planning to participate, including recent winners of the AI and AIX classes, Vageli Karas and Bruce Griggs. Be there!
Ask 'em any questions you want about racing Mustangs and Fords. Have some fun, eh? Ask 'em what they race, what you can race, HOW to race, what life if like at 85 M.P.H. in a turn most of us would take at 30 M.P.H.

I have always had a strong interest in open track and am very interested in getting more involved. I am currently building my 1989 Mustang LX Coupe for open track racing. Looking forward to meeting many more open track enthusiasts today and seeing what I can learn.
Hi Greg welcome aboard!
Can you tell us a little about your #12 Robinson Motorsport Mustang?
I am interested in knowing a little more about what you are running and how you have it set up.

Hi, Greg: I think everyone's working on LA time, where most of them are late. Were you at Fontana earlier this month?

The basic car is an '86 GT but has been upgraded within the rules to be competitive. Essentially this means better brakes and different model year heads to bring the power up to the allowable limit.. We can run no more than 230 rear wheel HP and 300 lbs. torque.
Greg, that must really put the emphasis on the car's suspension and your driving skills. Do you have similar restrictions on what modifications you can make to the cars suspension?
Welcome aboard JWL and b_tone! Not late at all actually. Most people will continue to drift in after you guys

Maybe he didn't hear you, Scott. When we were trackside, you told me you'd modified yours; what've done with it? Did you say Panhard rod?

I thought that might've been you. Don't want to divulge any trade secrets, but what brakes and heads do you have?

Scott, the basic premise is to keep it simple and cost effective and so modifications are very limited. This is a driver's series because the cars are so close in power and handling. We are allowed to run any rate springs but cannot go to coilovers. Bushing material is unrestricted but may not change factory geometry. Rear lower arms may be replaced with aftermarket tubular or boxed style pieces. A panhard rod may be used. The motr must use all factory stock parts--not even Cobra parts are allowed. All smog equip can be removed. Stock factory exhaust headers or manifolds have to remain. No porting of heads. No special cams. You can mix and match pieces from with in the accepted model years however. For example, the 87-93 heads breathe better than those in '86.
Mike, the rules allow the Baer Sport kit up front: 12" rotors with cross drilling or slots with the twin piston PBR caliper. A single piston rear caliper is allowed and was defintely needed as the 86 had drums in the rear.
