Thanks for the reply Scott. I've been racing (SCCA) a ''79 2.3L Mustang and i'm in the process of building a new road racer, a "82 2.3. Do you or one of the other members know what the rear-end gear ratio, size is for a 2.3 from the factory. I'm sure the car is stock. When the car is converted i'll be running a blue-printed engine with a T-5 trans and would like to know what rear-end would give me the best performance.
I ran a 4.10 in my old "79 and it was great at my home track but at Mid-Ohio i'd get three-quarters of the way down the back-stretch and the tach would be buried and no-more gears left. TIA

It say's Y . The next code is 7YYGG. I've never understood the gear terminology for a rear-end. What's meant by 7.5 , 8.8, 9.0 and 3.75
4.10,etc. Any info is appreciated.
John, a Y is a 3.08 gear ratio, meaning that each time the rear wheel turns, the engine turns 3.08 times. It is not a locking rear end. A locking rear end has both rear wheels turn at the same time. You also shoul have a 7.75 inch rear end, the measurement is the size of the ring gear
I attached what your data tag should look like, and there is a picture of mine too
Thanks Twister. Info much appreciated. Had my nose in a Chilton manual all day looking for the info that you gave me in two sentences. This Chilton manual has been totally useless. 75% dribble.
Any advice on what gear-ratio i should be running.
Thanks again Twister. This is amazing. I've had questions answered tonite that i've wondered about for a month. You guys are alright. Just
found my suspension package from Max Motorsports via a thread i read
in this forum. Right-On!
Originally posted by Twister your welcome John, as for rcomending a ring gear for road racing, it is kinda hard, you might want to look at a 3.73 or a 3.45
I don't know if this ratio is available for Fords, but when I was toying around with the idea of road racing my V6 Camaro, I actually swapped my aftermarket 3.73s for the factory 3.23s in order to get my top-end speed up, I had the same problem, topping out well before the end of straight stretches.
The 3.23s fixed it without sacrificing too much acceleration, but a 2.8L V6 powered Camaro can rev a bit higher than the Ford 2.3 too.
