Default Road Racing setups

I am interested in setting up my GT for road racing. Does anyone have a coilover setup they can brag about?

Can I ask why you want a coilover? How serious are you getting? My buddy won his class in the Cannon Ball One Lap Race (SS/GT2) and has just FRPP suspension stuff with Baer Brakes. Daily Driver too. Beat out another S197 with full race suspension under it. There's a pic of his car in action and with the wheels off on Day 2 of the One Lap on my pics page of my site.

But...if you really want to, I'd look into Agent47.

+1 on that good buddy. 10-4

I do high, high end suspension stuff for a living and I got the FFRP kit for my car too. Unless you are trying to set some lap records you will be fine with the FFRP stuff.

But, if you want to spend some big dollars on coilovers I would be happy to sell you a set of Ohlins shocks with all the goodies (im one of their service centers). I could even give you a great deal on them. You would only be looking at about $4500

As far as roadrace setups for Mustangs I would talk to Agent47 and Maximum Motorsports. The new MM kit for the S197's is amazing! I would love to have it, but I am not going to spend that kind of money on something I don't need at all. And this is coming from a guy who spends money on all sorts of stuff he doesn't need.

Agent47's selling a double-a-arm setup only and it ain't cheap (about $2,300 as I recall).

I have QA1 coil overs front and rear and I've been very satisfied w/ the handling improvement even after my other suspension modifications.

You could also turn to the Griggs Racing suspension "swap" which is REAL expensive, comparatively speaking (anywhere from 10-13K).

BMR Fabrication offers some kits that are cheaper and offer some adjustablity too. You may also want to look at CHE's offerings.

We REALLY need to get together! I can eat raw cookie dough like they are going to quit making it

Ohlins on an S197? Why? May as well buy a race car

Guess it's all in who you talk to. I know someone that is a semi-pro road racer also. Runs a 66 Mustang with a full race suspension and an SVT Focus with a Magnacharger. The moral of my story? He told me to stay away from QA1 coil overs when I was shopping.

Like I said, all in who you talk to. I think those are a love or hate set up. I don't know enough to make an educated opinion, so I officially don't have one on them.

Classic Design had an AWESOME deal at their open house last night on Baer rotors for $350 for all 4 and FRPP FULL SUSPENSION KITS INSTALLED for $1500.

Foose 20" wheels with tires, brand new for $1200

Then there was the Saleen auction Tuesday here in Michigan where you could have landed enough road race parts cheap enough to try stuff and throw it away.

on the FRPP kit, are you referring to this kit?
2005-09 MUSTANG GT COUPE HANDLING PACK
- Dampers M-18000-A
- Lowering Springs M-5300-K
- Sway Bars M-5490-A
- Strut Tower Brace M-20201-S197

Are those Dynamic dampers any good? lot's of people mentioned the Tokico D-specs and said that would be good enough for what i want to do. I am partial to Bilstein myself, but they aren't adjustable.

Will the strut brace make a big difference? worth the money?

What did you guys do for the panhard bar? did you change that with your sway bars?

Yeah, that's the kit my buddy has on his car. He won the event at Virgnia Raceway during the One Lap with it. The springs and sway bars in that kit are actually Eibach.

Strut bar? Definitely. I believe in them, from 1964 to now. My wife's stock GT/CS has one, bought it before she got her car. Also a good add on is the lower A-arm brace that goes side to side. You then "box" the front end.

Also, the upper 3rd link. More solid and adjustable to get your pinion angle correct after lowering. The Steeda rear frame supports are good also.

Powergrid links (I can put you in touch with the owner).

CHE Adjustable Panhard and support brace. The stock one is like a wet noodle. Or you may want to consider a Watts if you're going for broke.

Braided brake lines! You'll love 'em. The Granatelli rear shock tower brace helps slightly also.

Last, if you get really serious, some scales

Oh, it would be a gun at a knife fight type deal. I have absolutely no reason to get some aside from the little bit of advertisng they could do for me (all of my stuff is Ohlins, even the Wifes bike), but they would be more of a conversation piece. With the FFRP kit the car is great. I would much rater put that BA Griggs suspension kit on my car first. Have you seen that sucker? It's incredible. I could get all geeked out with that setup. I would have to Have a 12-18 channel data acquisition system in the car. I could measure shock travel, braking G’s cornering G’s acceleration, gas on, gas off point, brake on, brake off points, both front and rear wheel speed sensors, it would be flat out stupid. I already have a small data system that is part of my dash. I got it from AIM Research. I won’t need to run any gauges because they are all on the dash and everything has a warning light as a back up, the shift light comes on in stages and it does track mapping when you download it too your laptop. And get this, I got it for less than it would have cost me to go full out Auto Meter and no one can see the dash unless they are sitting in the drivers seat.

I even put Ohlins on my sled, but in this case it was a huge advantage. My riding friends were all as fast as me. But once I got the Ohlins they didn't see me much Check out the pic.

Good thing I sold all my sleds! There are pics of my suspension on the Deycore.com website under suspension "blueprinting". I was nuts like you with my suspension stuff. Get in the rough twisties and the wife and I were GONE! She can ride too!

Had Digitron stuff on my sled. With playback of course.

Sqidd, I think it may be best we never hook up. Not enough hours in the day to cover everything!

Back on topic...At Mustang Alley today, FRPP had 2 FR500C cars on their sides. Real race cars, not fakes. Interesting to see what they had and DIDN'T have.

Rear end cooler system was sweet though!

Lost of data aqk stuff on those things. Linear travel, temp & pressures everywhere. Freakin' amazing.

Have you done any road racing before? If not, the first things you'll want to upgrade are the brakes and tires. By brakes I mean better lines and better pads. Loss of braking will slow your times down more than anything else on most tracks. Before I would start buying a bunch of suspension stuff, get some seat time and get used to the feel of the car on the track. Then when you start changing stuff, you will have a better idea how those changes affect the car. The best mod is a driver mod. Attend a driving school, even a one day class if there is one available near you.

Are you talking competition road racing or just open track event (HPDE) set ups?
