While I don't condone street racing, I have done it. Sure it's dangerous and I could have died or killed someone else, but it's almost impossible to avoid. Here's my example:

You pull up to stop light the road ahead of you is clear as far as you can tell, in my case my radar detector isn't picking up anything, the weather is fine (no rain or snow), and then a Camaro, Import, or even another Mustang pulls up beside you. Alright no big deal right, you check out their car just to see if you like it or not whatever, but then they start revving their engine on you or in some cases with kids in ricers start talking trash to you out their window (it's happened to me). So what happens next?

1. You stick to your no street racing guns and say how about at the track?
2. You ignore the situation, and then feel like a wuss later.
3. Your testerone & adrenaline kicks in, and say to yourself or even out the window "Oh yeah well let's just see."

I'm willing to bet that 99% of the Mustang owners here end up going with option 3, we by our very nature of being men and owning a car with so much power are generally going to except the challenge. It may not be the right thing to do, but it's a fact. Even if you go with option 1, what do you think will happen? Well chances are they will either think or tell you that you are a P*ssy or say something inflamatory about how slow your car is. Now you can justify this by saying well words can't hurt me. But try telling that to yourself on the drive home or when your sitting home running the situation thru your mind again because you are angry and wish you could have gotten the guy at the track but you know that's never gonna happen and now you feel just like the wimp that he called you. Because in the end you know that guy will always think his car was faster than yours and you were afraid to race him, and despite what many of you say that fact will gnaw at you inside.

The best comparison might be if someone tries to start a fight with you one on one, and while you think you can take the guy you back down instead. The fact is if you do back down you will mentally torture yourself later. I don't go looking for races, but if someone revs their engine at me and the street looks clear I go with option 3. Granted I dont' consider myself a street racer, because I don't go to these little gatherings of street races where they all race on the street and I don't hang out with street racers. But I don't back down from challenges either.

Just think about all the threads you have read here about some member talking about how they got their car up to 140 mph or more exactly where can you go that fast at? Definitely not a drag strip, so the majority of these people that did this did it on the streets probably a highway I guarantee it. Or how about all the stories about how some member just smoked "X" car, how often do you hear the words drag strip or 1/4 mile mentioned in these stories? I sure can't remember many so where did these races take place? On the streets obviously.

Like I said I don't condone it I know it's dangerous, but the fact is we all do it from time to time whether you want to admit it or not

We're all "Sinners", but that doesnt mean it is OK to sin. Same goes with street racing. Just because we own powerful sports cars, doesnt mean its OK to street race. I understand what you're saying, I've street raced too. But I will walk away when its in my power to do so, unless you come at me, then the board is layed out different.

Dont do it.

damn me to :/ I even hvn't street raced yet, but i find myself thinking of it LOL

I do go cruise with my friends,(GT, Cobra, & Classic TA) we are not wild crzy drivers, we cruise and pick up speed on lonely roads, nothing to extreme

We usually encircle ricers at a light and rev our engines like crzy lol

hmm. well I seem to have envoked alot more emotion than I had planned on and stepped on rather sensitive toes. I apologize for that. Thanks to everyone who replied to this thread compassionately and without immediately chastizing me. I suppose this is a topic centered around the morality of an individual and not his/her desire to go fast (ie. you are making the desicision to potentially endanger yourself and others). Maybe it would be better if we switched this to a thread about road racing or autocross rather than street racing. Either way, I'm still interested in those advanced driving skills I have not yet attained.

Johnny:

You wont regret taking lessons, in my case, it has not only changed the way i drive, but also the way i look at things while driving.

Sure there are always nice street spots where you could ocassionally drive fast with minimum risk of an accident, but real road course racing even if its AUTOX can be a challenge.

I'm applying for my Pilots license in a couple of months, and with some luck i will be racing on a Rally by october.

I think thats more of a challenge than racing a few rice burners on the street.

Take care.
