Ditto what Rob said. A little backpressure from typical exhaust systems actually helps increase torque in most stock/street cars.
Open pipes can add 10-30 HP under some circumstances, mainly larger displacement motors running 2 inch (stock) exhaust, especially single, not dual exhaust. Thing is, that extra unrealized HP is usually not found unless ringing that motor out to 5,000 to 7,000 + RPM. This can mean 2-4 tenths on the drag strip for most musclecars, which is also one of the few places you might be able to get away with the defening roar (120+Decibals) of uncorked collectors.
I thought about uncorking my exhaust system for running at Cal Speedway and going through the high-banked turns at up to and over 130MPH, just because it would sound cool. Between the hassle and slight chance of damage to a valve or O2 sensor, I didn't do it, but having found a video of another car like mine running uncorked, it sure was tempting.
BTW, what does Track Day (Round and Rounds) mean??
Cheers,
Toby
