I've had my coil overs on for about 6 weeks now and I'm really happy with them. I changed k-member, struts, and went to coil overs and c&c plates all at the same time and I had a
problem with clunking and creaking that ended up being control arm bolts that were tight but not "omg-i-just-ripped-my-groin" tight. Since then, I'm really happy with the coil overs. The ride and handling is greatly improved.
As far as quality, let me just say first that the granatelli instructions are basically non-existant. There is a diagram that shows the installation order of all the hardware but they never mention that if you have Tokicos how you have to modify the strut by carefully removing the upper flange by breaking the three spot welds. Without this step, you could never get the threaded sleeve down over the strut body. Critical info, yet granatelli didnt think to provide it. Another absolute necessity is steel, four bolt c&c plates. Once again, my thanks go to Maximum Motorsports who posted
installation instructions on their website that detail every step with color pictures even. Maximum Motorsports is truly an asset to the Mustang community. If I am contemplating upgrading a suspension component, I can go read these installation guides and use that info to make my decision.
Any Max Motorsports components are the standard by which all other companies components should be judged. And they go into great detail why their coil over kit is better. The instructons I agree are invaluable, but there are other improvements as well. Are they worth it?:
1. They use o-rings to seal the thrust bearing from dirt and moisture. The granatellis didnt. Is it critical? probably not.
2. They provide better anodizing. This is not important to me.
3. They provide a set screw that prevents the lower spring perch locking ring from turning. On the granatellis the spring perch and the locking ring just jam together. Does it matter? So far on my car it doesnt.
4. They mention their sleeves fit better over the struts which prevents rattling. I dont notice any rattling on the granatellis.
5. They offer a better assortment of spacers between the upper perch and the c&c plates. I agree that could be useful on the granatellis, but I was able to make what they gave me work.
6. They offer higher quality springs. The springs granatelli provided (street version) perform well and have not sagged after six weeks.
7. On the max motorsports kit, the spanner wrenches are additional cost ($10 each). Granatelli gives you two wrenches. Advantage Granatelli.
So in this application, I'd have to say for the money, if you're not going road racing, the granatelli kit would suit most peoples needs. I paid $209 for the kit with springs and wrenches whereas the Max Motorsports kit with springs and wrenches will cost $389.
But I really appreciate the quality and free information that Max motorsports provides so I am ordering a strut tower brace, shorter sway bar endlinks, and urethane rack bushings from them this week. And I will do business with them whenever I can justify it.
