You start by learning slowly.
Open-track is non-competive time on a road course. For less experienced drivers (and those who don't want to worry about it) passing is allowed only in designated straight sections of the track. Often only when the slower driver points you by (so you know he sees you).
"Full course passing" rules generally say the over-taking car is responsible for a safe pass. It also means the slower driver has to keep an eye on his mirrors.
You can also do OPEJN-TRACK time trials, there each driver starts X seconds ahead of each other, when a car is at a point of getting too close to the front car, this one has to move aside and let him pass.
Some tracks would have officers with blue flags to signal the slower cars.

lol, did that with the Alfa club...kept catching them!
Also importat: make sure you have ZERO fluid leaks: engine oil, trans, rear end, coolant, etc. If some spills you can get yourself and others in trouble.
one last thing from me....plan to replace your brakes after running hard, with my modified "stock" set up, I have cracked a rotor and blued both drums. I cant wait to see how the 4-wheel discs work out
Take classes, you learn a lot in the classroom and then when you hit the track with your instructor you learn even more. I am going for my last class so I can get my license for American Iron. I hope to be racing next year. And you can go to a school for as little as $400.00
