What's the deal with the power steering/power brakes?
I hear on the Edge cars (99-04) you can't ditch the power steering without screwing up the brake booster.
Is it possible to swap the booster with a pre-99 and run a flaming river setup?

I think that they are technically "New Edge" Mustangs. You confused me for a minute with the Edge car now coming out.
The brakes are boosted by a Hydroboost system that uses the hydraulic fluid from the power steering pump. If you remove the power steering including the pump, you will need to substitute a completely vacuum type system that was used previous to Hydroboost. I always thought that while the Hydroboost system simplified things by using the power steering pump for 2 purposes, if the pump stopped working you would lose boost to the steering and brakes, both. Not a good situation.

Is there a vacuum system left?

I suspect that in thinking about it, the Hydroboost is probably used because modern engines don't seem to have the vacuum available that earlier engines had. I remember that my wife's 1988 Mercury Grand Marquis had a vacuum reservoir to store up vacuum to supply the different vacuum systems.
If you change the steering box are you going to manual steering? If so, just leave the PS pump to supply the Hydroboost. I don't really know if a modern engine would be able to supply enough vacuum for a brake booster. It might require a vacuum pump anyway and, in that case, I would just leave the PS pump and the Hydroboost in place.

That kind of defeats teh purpose of swapping to a manual rack . . .
I know the SN95 cars had vacuum, since the AC/Heater doors were still operated by vacuum lines . . .
I hate vacuum lines

Yes, vacuum lines are a real pain, particularly when they get old. I don't know if the SN95 had vacuum boosters for the brakes, maybe someone else will know. If they did you could probably retrofit the vacuum booster. Good Luck with your project!
