Default Best Model for Starting Point For Road Racing

Hey guys and girls, I was wondering what the best starting point for road racing Mustang in terms of which Model. I'm looking at used cars, and I was thinking an early model SN95 or late model Foxbodys. The SN95 seem to have more parts but the Foxbodys can be made much lighter. I'm not looking to spend much in the car at first, but it will be a dedicated road racing car.

Thanks, Phil

Default Race Car

I'd try to find a car that already had most of the parts you need. Race cars often come on the market, some because the driver lost interest, and some because the driver outgrew them.

Either way, you can get the car for pennies on the dollar vs having to buy/build everything from scratch.

As for which is better, I'll predict that you will find more inexpensive ex-racing foxes for sale than the later models - but either way, the decision would depend on just what you were getting for your money.

I'd let the dollars enter into the equation.

I think I just saw a few cars that might fit the bill. I'll see if I can link them to this thread later.

First car is potential track/street candidate.

2nd car is already for the track, but could easily be modified for track work (suspension and brakes, of course).

Third car is road racer (and cheap at the price).

I would recommend going for a SN95, preferably the 94-95 with a 5.0L engine. The Fox is approx 300lbs lighter than the SN95...but the SN95 has a better wheelbase, all disc brakes, and is wider than the fox. This helps make it better for road course. If this is going to be a dedicated road racer than you can always cut off the excess wieght. I've read about some SN95s get down into 2700lbs range (given that is a lot of cutting and custom parts). If you are interested in drag racing than go with a Fox, if road racing stick with a SN95. Just my $.02

Here are some other facts Fox vs. SN95
Wheelbase 100.5--101.5
Length 179.5--181
Width 68.3--71.8
wieght 2800--3100

I would agree on looking for a 94-95. It is the best for a low cost starter car.
