Default An example of automatics being slower.

Last night, at Spokane Raceway Park, I ran against a 2005 GT, auto, with CAI, no tune and Flowmasters.

I have a 2006 GT, manual, with muffler delete, LCAs and a short shifter. No CAI, no tune.

This was the most exciting race I have ever been in.

Both our reaction times were within a 100th of a second of 0.2 seconds.

He was a 0.1 second faster to 60ft.

1/8th I was 0.08 seconds behind.

I lost by 1/100th of a second, at the 1/4 mile.

His ET 13.8650........... My ET 13.8648
speed 100.70 ........... 104.17

My ET was 2/10,000ths faster.

Summary: His automatic got him out of the hole faster but I was climbing up on him from then on. My top speed was way faster than his and he had a CAI. The five speed is faster but the auto is quicker.

ur right. he needs a tune to optimize his shift points. your car will be faster because less parasitic loss thru the tranny

so what do you think would have happened if he had a tune to shift 'optimally' for drag racing, as you were?

I personally prefer Manuals for work or performance, but for flat out acceleration it's hard to beat a properly set up auto, IMHO. (properly set up meaning different than stock...)

Shouldn’t this be in the drag racing forum?

Oh well manuals are going to be faster then auto’s don’t think anyone would disagree, but after a certain point, way above stock the autos are faster……….

Think about it tons of people want to swap there autos for manuals, the majority of these people are stock and bolt ons……………..then the majority of serious drag racers want to switch from manual to autos. I believe at certain speeds shifting manually is more of a hindrance and a properly built auto is faster…..

An automatic doesn't miss shifts, they're more consistant, and can be stronger than a manual. On the downside, they eat up power, are heavy, and considered girly by some. But they eat up power because they're actually in two gears at the same time in normal operations, resulting in the characteristic mushy shifting. A properly set up automatic doesn't slide into the next gear but snap into it, and is actually faster than a manual.
I like a manual for an overall street car, they're just more fun. And an automatic for either a daily-driver-in-stop-and-go-traffic or a dedicated drag car. Just my opinion.
