Default Stage 1 of Modifications: Chassis stiffening Tips and Tricks

Ok the first thing I want to do to my 92 gt is stiffen up the chassis. I have did some research and this is what I think I should do first. If you could give any tips on doing something like this, or where to find more info on installing the following:

Subframe connectors.

Strut tower brace

G Load or K member brace

If you could give me some idea on which brand I should get and how to install them I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Default Chassis

You're making a good decision with going with the chassis first... Definitely a down fall of the 5.0. The subframes will make considerable difference... I installed a pair of Maximum Motorsports standard subframes on my mustang and I could notice the difference right away. I have always gone with Maximum Motorsports suspension components, because they specialize in Mustang parts--primarily suspension. Just a note on the subframe install. Unless you're pretty confident in being able to do it yourself, I would look into someone else do it. Because you have to have a strong enough MIG welder, and not many people have those sitting in their garages, but you may, who knows. Then you have to make sure the car is set up properly before welding them in, because you don't want to weld those puppies in, and have your chassis be crooked. So just be very careful.
As for your other mods, I haven't done any of those to my car yet, so I can't offer much advice. But I'd stick with MM if you can, they're good, and they're customer service is great, too. Hope this helps.

Do you know where I can find any info on doing this stuff myself, I am new the to whole car game and I am thirsty for knowledge. I want to learn to do most of this stuff myself, so if you could point me in the right direction, or list the steps to do this things, I would greatly appreciate it.

Jason, chassis stiffening is an excellent starting point for any fox body mustang.

The strut tower and 4 point brace is something you can definately do yourself. Maximum products are top notch and they are a great company to deal with. They offer a really nice chassis stiffening kit at a very reasonable price, that comes with easy to follow installation instructions. I used Maximum's kit on both my stangs and could'nt be happier with my decision. Here's the link if you would like to check it out for yourself:

With regard to the subframe connectors, I agree with 2littlemoney. This is something you should consider getting installed by a reputable high quality professional installer. Since they are mig welded in, you want to get this done right the first time.

Once you get the chassis properly stiffened I would suggest you consider brakes as your next upgrade. Stock fox body brakes suck. If you plan to go fast, you need good brakes. There are plenty of brake upgrade options available for the fox and makes it a good choice for the do-it-yourselfer.

Good Luck with you project and please keep us posted as to how you make out.

Cheers,

Jason one of the most popular and cheapest brake upgrades is installing the Mark IV front calipers, SVO master cylinder and then perhaps rear disk brakes from a thunderbird or use the Stainless Steel Brakes rear disk brake kit (same thing). I did this with both my stangs and it works great on the street. Here's a link to an earlier post on this subject:

Another upgrade that has become quite popular is to swap in 5 lug front calipers, rear side axles and brakes from a later model mustang. The downside is you can no longer use your stock 4 lug wheels. The upside there is a far wider selection of 5 lug wheels available on the market, including the new Cobra 5 lug wheels. Of course, the brakes are also far superior to those found on the 87-93 fox body mustangs, even with the SVO/rear disk brake upgrade. You can check Ford Motorsport or what is now called Ford Racing for a complete kit for this upgrade.

Another option is to go to an aftermarket supplier such as Baer, Wilood or Stainless Steel Brakes for a complete brake upgrade package. These companies offer superior braking systems for your stang. This route is probably the most expensive but the braking systems offered are also considered the best!

What option you choose should really be based on what you intend to do with your stang. For street and limited road racing then either of the first two options would probably be adequate. If you intend to do some serious racing or just happen to like the best then check out some of the packages from Baer, Wilwood or Stainless Steel Brakes.

You can find all three websites on our Mustang Links section: Here's the link:

Hope this is of some help and please keep us posted as to what you decide.

Cheers,

Scott,

Thanks for the tips. When end up getting this beast my plan is as follows. Stiffen chassey, upgrade suspension, upgrade breaks. When that is done, i will figure out what to do next.

Thanks

Jason
