after a good wash, you should use a cleaner like claybar, then a good polish, then wax it.This will give it a great shine and protection.

If its a polish with no wax, it means that it will polish/ bring back a surface if its getting dull. Wax is the one that will protect and keep it looking clean and glossy. If you get wax there is carnauba, and also some high tech polymer waxes. I use the mothers reflections polymer wax. It's a little more expensive than others but it works really good.

I use Kit Wax with carnuba on this car. It was recommended by the guy who painted it.

So does "wax" bring about high shine? If so, why polish?

Also, what exactly does "cleaner wax" do? It came in my Meguiar's clay bar kit I bought last weekend and I did use it, but have since wondered what exactly "cleaner wax" means.

I've always just "polished" with a Meguiar's product...

And now I just noticed Judy's post says "sealant." What the heck is that?

A polish is what makes the shine, a wax is meant to protect it although a wax does have shine enhancers in it as well. It should be polished before waxing, best is a carnuba wax.

Sealant seals in all the hard work you did - polishing and waxing... it's mostly a harder barrier than regular wax against the weather and elements for your paint... it's extra assurance basically... I think Meguires calls it a sacrificial barrier... and that's really a good term... some are better than others... but none last forever and need to be reapplied a couple times a year, every 6 months or so.

Many people use one or the other: wax or sealant... others will tell you to layer, that's what I do and I couldn't be happier with the way my ride turns out...

OK. Thank you, Judi. Thanks a bunch for the hyperlink. That's definitely the kind of stuff I needed to know. I've never "waxed." Perhaps there's some wax in my polish--I don't know.
Guess I'll go buy some wax at lunch time.
So you wash, polish, then wax. Is it necessary, or desired, to wax every time you wash and polish (like weekly)? Or is that (waxing) that you're referring to above when you say a couple times per year?

we are talking about two things here one is a wax the other is a sealant a sealant will bond with your paint and a wax will cover it now most have a system to use That is the best way to get use to them THIS is what I would do>

step 1 wash car with dawn this will remove any old wax

step 2 clay bar car and brand is fine will get the surface super smoth remove and rail dust and junk in your paint

step 3 rewash car

step 4 look at surface for swirl marks if so use a swirl remover with is a item most of the time used with a buffer

step 4 use a clearner polish this will give you a good clean paint surface

step 5 now use a sealant or wax to protect your paint

i was zaino check out there web site many helpful hints not just for there products so if doing ziaino i would do the following
1 wash with dawn
2 clay bar Z16
3 swirl remover Z PC
4 cleaner Zaio
5 sealant Z5
6 clean with Z6
7 sealant Z5
8 clean Z6
9 sealant Z2
10 cleaner Z 6
11 super shine Z8

This is what I would do.... others may chime in and agree or disagree... but here's how I keep my ride sparkling...

Wash your car with regular dish detergent... strips off all old polish, wax, etc.... (ONLY use dish detergent when you want to strip off old wax and polish... not everytime you clean the car - get car wash for other washes)...

Do the routine I stated - it'll take a good 1/2 day... then, maintain with washes and instant detail... when you feel it's getting unmanagable - do the routine again... strip, wash, polish, wax and seal.... a cover goes on my ride every single night and a California Car Duster stays in the trunk for fast dustings...

This is the thing... you won't need to wax and polish nearly as much as you do polish now if you wash, polish, wax and seal - I do that routine 2x's a year and instant detail and wash and detail inbetween.... if you start with an excellent base and remove grime and yuck build up - you won't have to polish and wax everytime you clean the car! A good wash and instant detail is all I need for inbetween washes...

Let me know if I answered your question - sometimes I just babble... lol

Turns out, I have been "waxing" my car. I've been using Mother's FX SynWax. I have half a bottle left so that's probably what I've been using since I bought the car. It works well-car looks great!
Last Friday I bought some Mother's Carnauba Cleaner Wax. We put that on Jesica's black car Saturday. Looks awesome! The bottle says it cleans, polishes and waxes all in the same application.
I purchased it b/c of the carnauba wax. Next time I wax mine, I'll use it. It is a little tougher to get off than the SynWax.
