Default How to remove bugs and tar from new paint?

Before I had my car painted I use to use a bug sponge that was wrapped in a cloth netting to remove bugs, tough spots and tar. I would push hard on that one spot and wash in a tiny circle until the spot was removed. After I got my car painted I tried this and after I dried the car I could see scratches in the clear coat where I used the same technique. Lukily I had to take my car back to the bodyshop to pic up my louvers and I told the owner about it and he was nice enough to buff the scratches out for me.

Now I'm wanting to know is there a safer way to remove bugs and tar from my clear coat without scratching it? Is bug and tar remover that you buy at autozone safe to use on freshly painted vehicles?

What do you guys recommend to use on freshly painted cars to remove tough spots and bugs from clear coats?

Napthalene is much gentler.

Never heard of it. So what is it and where can I find it?

You can buy bug and tar cleaner from an auto parts store, I've used it before but can't remember the brand. I will be traveling to NW PA next week, and so I will need to be getting some (for the bugs).

You'll find it in any hardware store with the paint thinners.

Turtle Wax bug and tar remover has been recommended but I haven't really found it that great. I try and take it to a car wash first to get as much off as I can. Then take a sponge and water and try and just wet the bug spots down first to soften then carefully try and clean them off.

I've found that the Turtle Wax stuff works good if you spray it on and let it soak for a couple of minutes. Seems to work better after I wash the car also.

Take a rag soaked in diesel fuel coat area, allow to sit for approx. 5 mins. wash with soap and water rubbing the bug and tar area. Works great !! Been doing it for 30 years.

Stoner, the company that makes Invisible Glass window cleaner, which is an excellent product also makes a product called Tarminator, which easily removes bugs and tar. I got it at Pep Boys.

I agree!

If you take good care of your car and not let them bake on your paint for days - you'll be fine... when you notice a small buildup, time for a wash.

To get them off now I would totally detail your car... now you have a clean base to work from when they show up again.
