Default Scratches ticking me off.

How costly would it be to get a detail shop to buff the paint to get the micro scratches out of black paint. My car looks ok but I'm ticked off about these. And my plans now are to use this car as a sunday driver so I want to clean it up real good.

a quality detail shop will charge anywhere between 150-250 to buff them out

I've been doing my black Roush myself one panel at a time by hand. The guy before me had it buffed by an idiot and it was all swirled up. If the scratches aren't too deep you can use a cleaner wax like Mothers and then a conventional wax after. I'm spending about 1.5 hours a night on each panel and the difference is unbelievable! All those little spider scratches and swirls that you see in the sun light are gone!

If you do have someone buff your car MAKE SURE they know what they are doing!! An inexperienced person can ruin your paint!

1. Clean and dry the car (obviously)

2. Pick one panel. Apply the cleaner wax firmly in about a 4 inch swirling motion, side to side, from top to bottom, overlapping each row by 50%. Don't press too hard but your arm should be burning after a few minutes. Let the wax dry to a haze then wipe it with a soft cotton cloth very quickly side to side. Depending on how bad the paint is you may have to repeat this step several times.

3. After you get the shine you are looking for you need to use a good conventional wax. Again, one panel at a time, 4 inch swirling motion, let it dry to a haze and wipe briskly with soft cloth. It won't take out any major scratches but I guarantee it will look WAY better.

*You do not have to apply the wax as hard as the cleaner. Like I said before, I'm spending about 1.5 hours "hand buffing" each panel then it only takes 10 minutes to wax it.

*Be sure to use something mild like that Mothers cleaner wax. It is easy to screw up your car with some of those rubbing compounds if you don't know what you are doing.

*Be careful around non painted trim pieces. It is a good idea to tape them off.

If you have any other questions let me know!

You should try the 3M swirl mark remover. Use the one for dark colored cars.

I've had good luck with Meguiars products on my cars. Five step process...

- Wash Car.
- Clay Bar
- Paint Cleaner (removes some scratches)
- Paint Polish (removes the most scratches)
- Wax (hides any scratches remaining)

Most of the time I just wash the car and then wax it. When I do the entire five steps I like to use something that will strip all the old wax and everything else off the car like Dawn. Theoretically, the clay bar should remove all the wax from the car, but this way I can ensure that the paint is as clean as it gets before I start.

You can also try Meguiars Scratch X it works pretty darn well. Although, I've found that a separate cleaner and polish work a little bit better on my black car.
