I want to strip off some undercoating under the hood of my car but I dont want to hurt the paint like a metal scraper would. Is there a product I can buy that would loosen it up so it can be wiped up? Will bug and tar remover work? I would think a hard rubber scraper would work but can I find something like that? Any suggestions or tips would be much obliged, thanks!

Yeah, I wondered about that. I saw you pic on you engine and it's looks great!! Then I noticed the undercoating and thought, why didn't he take that off while the engine was apart?
I believe you can use varsol or Pre-Kleeno soaked in a rag to soften up the undercoating without hurting the paint underneath. If you have access to a pressure washer that would help a great deal.
I would not attempt to scrape it off, that will just lead to scratches and then you would have to repaint the engine bay.
Yes, they are both solvent based. Varsol is usually carried in hardware stores in the paint section. I use in in my parts cleaning tank for degreasing parts.
Pre-Kleeno is a brand name. It is found in auto body repair stores. It is primarily used as wax and grease remover, but does an excellent job of preparing a surface for paint. It also goes by a number- 900. Hope this helps out.
