I know a lot of you have painted your mufflers. I fully plan to paint mine before installing. I have 1300 degree flat black paint and ready as soon as mufflers arrive and I intend to do quality prep work (rough sand, clean, then wash with acetone). Then at least two coats with about 30 minutes drying time between the two.
BUT, will that last for a couple years? Anyone have experience here?
Why do I want to do this? I do not like the silver cans under the rear end. I want the chrome to show, not the silver metal.
Thanks for any advise or sharing of experience.

Just from personal experience, you dont really need to paint your mufflers. I had a 2002 V6 mustang and put true dual Flowmasters on it in 2005. I traded it in a couple months ago and they still had nothing wrong with them. No rust, no holes, no scrapes or anything like that. So again, just my opinion, you dont really need to paint them. Also, are your mufflers going to be hanging low enough to be seen? That seems kind of odd to me since I am used to having them tucked up so they dont scrape on anything

Reason: Forgot a question
I painted a heat shield with that stuff a long time ago on a different vehicle, and it lasted for about 4-5 months before it started to fade a rusty brown. It was cheap enough to just respray it when it faded.
It was the heat shield covering the exhaust manifold so it was much hotter too, so the mufflers should last even longer.
Thanks. Since 2005, muffler can be seen from the rear. It is not terrible, but it is much cleaner to have then where they can been seen less, thus the black paint. Not to preserve them, just appearance.

Ok.....I understand now. I have never looked at the rear end of any of the 2005+ stangs so I didnt realize what you were referring to. So yeah, go ahead and paint them
I just installed FFRP duals and while the tips look great the mufflers not so much. Does high temp paint have any problems sticking to stainless? Any prep that will help?

I still have not painted mine but I do have the paint and have talked to a lot of people. I do still plan to do it however. I intend to use steel wool and rub them down the best I can to create scuffing to which the paint and adhere. Prior to painting I will clean them completely with Acetone to get any residue off of them. Ideally, they tell me, a third prep step should be added, to wash the complete surface with a TSP type cleaner. The order was, rough them up, clean with TSP, then wipe with Acetone. Then paint.
Let us know if you do it, would love to see pics. BTW: One guy I asked at a pro paint shop guessed it would hold fine for a couple years, then possible peeling. He suggested touch would not be hard, just clean them again and paint.
Good luck!

well I went down to the auto store and looked at a few different brands. Most tell you to use high temp primer but it doesnt tell you how long before you can paint over with final color coat. The guy there told me one problem is that most people use the 1200 degrea paint for headers and that are mufflers never get to the proper temp to fully cure it. He recomended 500 degrea engine paint.
I went with DupliColor with ceramic. It does not require a primer. It says up to 1200 degrees. I just read the instructions again and it does not mention Acetone, so will probably not do it. Just sand, wash and paint. They recommend two coats. I was going to do it today but it is 80 degrees. Maybe when it cools down. Never heard the issue of using 500 degree paint.

Well I went for it. I just hit the back ends of them though. It really hides them and brings out the tips from the rear veiw. I think they look good from the side so ill just keep them clean. I ruffed them up with some fine grit sandpaper and cleaned with alcohol. I masked everything and gave it a few good coats of 1200 degrea paint. Looks great now just to see if it lasts.
It was a very sunny day here and it was messing with my camera. It kept darkining so I had to use the flash. In normal light its as flat black as it gets.
